I know the selling point of this card is its hardware mpeg encoding.
But I was wondering if it would also allow capture with uncompressed AVI or other codecs, if one had the right software (Virtual Dub, Vegas etc.)
Also can someone confirm that it will capture PAL as well as NTSC?
Thanks.

Hello,
Sorry it's MPEG only (at least the 250 that I have is).
Can't tell you about the two formats, doubtful that it could do both though...

Nope, not with the 250 or the 350. My 350 is pretty nice. I've had the AIW for years and never used the AVI but if that's something you want, stay away form the Hauppauge.

Some people have reported using Hauppauge WinTV PVR 230/350 to capture at a VERY high bitrate ... like 12,000kbps to 15,000kbps then do some editing in VirtualDubMod then frameserve to a software encoding like TMPGEnc to get it down to spec.
At a super high bitrate like that you should get pretty much artifact free compression but it still is not lossless like HuffyUV and even PICVideo MJPEG on the highest setting is less compression I think.
But that is one way to capture, edit, then do a software encode where you can do a 2-pass VBR.
Think of it as a "work around" method to a hardware MPEG only capture card.
