Isn it the best way to edit an avi file before proceed to encoding in DVD mpeg2 format? Why do I have to edit the mpeg2 than edit the avi before that encode to mpeg? I think it is better to cut the unwanted scenes while the file is still an avi (no loss of quality) and THEN encode

But which is the best program for simple croping, removing from avi unwanted scenes etc? Or the encoding programs (as TMPGenc) can do this job by simpy select the parts u want to get encoded (and leave the rest out?)

    Thank you in advanced

Tmpgenc is good enough and includes cropping and trimming functions that are really handy. Also has filters but you must be possessed to use them because they are very slow.

If you want to trim, resize, filter and anyway convert an AVI file, the tool to use is VirtualDUB. You can also use several other editors, but VirtualdUB is versatile, fast and still evolving. Also has a huge number of plug-in filters to use.

If you only want to resize the video and only trim a small portion of the source file, if you are going to use Tmpgenc to encode it's perhaps the best choice to let Tmpgenc do the resize for you.

For detailed trimming at the frame level and filtering, you better use VirtualDUB. Also, if you want to do frame precice trimming and the source video is in DivX or xVid format, you cannot really avoid the re-encode. Otherwise you need to be careful to cut at Keyframes.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Thank you very much for your responses.
What I only want is to cut some unwanted small parts. So I do not need any sophisticated tool.
I tried VDub but it takes a lot of time to make the new avi file.
So I suppose I have to use the encoding program (MainConcept) to choose from the avi file
    what to encode.

The same can be done better by TMPGEnc but I have problem with the quality, I dont know why, the resulting mpeg is "pixelized", I mean like a bad jpeg. I ve tried various settings but the results were
more or less the same. So for the moment I dont use it for encoding (and profoundly for cuting)

Tell me something if u know. TMPGEnc DVD Author has an option to cut the unwanted parts
from mpeg2. But does it have to re-encode again?

    Thank you again

You dont have to create a new avi with virtual dub. You can just make your changes then instead of choosing save avi just choose start frameserver. Frameserve from virtualdub to tmpgenc.
    Look here

for a guide on frameserving with virtual dub and you will see it is relatively easy!

    Good luck!
