  1. I am having a tough time trying to import video from a DVD into an avi format for editing in Premiere 6.5. Most of the files I create crash Premiere 6.5. I know that the dvix codec does not work in Premiere 6.5, so I need to create a different type of avi file that does not crash P.6.5 and possibly does not need to be rendered. Did anyone already solve this problem and can share?
    Thank you!

Open the avi in virtualdub and use the panasonic DV codec (seperate download) to create a more Premiere friendly DV avi file.

You will probably have to resize your video using the resize filters. Legal resolutions are 720 x 480 for NTSC, and 720 x 576 for PAL. Watch your aspect ratio when you do this, and pad with borders if required.

Follow the allowed project settings. Convert your MPeg4 to one of those.

In addition to DV format (PAL/NTSC 4:3/16:9) you have

    720x480 720x576 Uncompressed RGB
    640x480 768x576 Uncompressed RGB
Arbitrary frame sizes, plus square, D1, D4, D16 and anamorphic pixel aspect ratios.

Also support for many types of specialized hardware cards (including MJPG, greater bit depth, etc.)
