I have a 1010, 1100 and 1200 they play pal, vcd, dvd-r dvd+rw
though their remotes hardly ever work right on a commercial or authored dvd -
Q: Why do they give what others don't?
A: $$$$$ They give you what you want, you give them what they want. It's a win-win situation. -
The Mintek 1600 for $47 at BestBuy is another player that will play anything you throw at it.
-
I think the Mintek 1600 player has a dual beam (whatever that means) and nowhere on the box or manual does it say it plays all the media and formats that it actually does.
-
Some of the big companies that make the high-end (expensive) players are also a little more hobbled by connections to the movie industry, which tends to discourage anything but standard region-locked, macrovision-enabled, DVD-only players.
-
From what I've read, the Apex ppl just use a standard DVD-ROM and hook it up to a decoder board.
I've read that the major companies manufactor special drives for their DVD players which increases cost. -
some good replys guys, imma stya with this for now, all of the movies ive burned so far have played excellently in xvcd format...HOORAH FOR APEX...
-
Hey I'm not Apex bashing but isn't this the same as why generic tomato sauce does not taste as good as HP tomato sauce. Bottomline, there is a reason why APEX players are cheaper than the brand players. I'm sure some engineer types will be able to explain why.
BTW, I used to have an Apex player but the picture quality was not as good when compared to the Samsung I also had at the time.
Just my 2 cents... -
You said it.
"the picture isn't as good"
All those Dolby Digital Noise Reduction systems and color enhancement units are extra parts which equal higher production cost. -
Shinco is a Chinese co. that makes most bargain DVD players(Apex,Mintek,Cyberhome,Shinsonic,etc.).I have a Mintek 2110 I bought for $80 and it plays everything but SVCD.
Where your player is made+brand=cost -
Does that Mintek 1600 play SVCD? That's the big thing i want. I'm lookin for a player at a store that plays dvd, vcd, svcd (apex 1100 that play vcd, svcd is no longer sold in stores).
-
naw man..stop hating on apex my fellow peers, it plays my xvcds very good, good quality(maybe its the way im encoding the movie)..and it was inexpensive...imma support it..they have played everything i have thrown at it so far...though i was advised to get the extended service plan for it from future shop because the guy said they break pretty easy...no probs..i paid the extra $25 and it still came under $100 cdn

Apex is perfect at anything CD. It has issues with burned DVD. Not always, but lots of times.
Mintek is perfect with anything DVD. It has issues with non-VCD CD formats. Anything over 1856 bitrate (on CD) usually will not play in the Minteks.
Why play so well? No licensing, no advertising, etc. Just good product at affordable prices. They make their money by bulk, not per unit as Sony and others do. Sort of why Hytop did so well in grocery stores. No ads, but decent food, as good as other brands.
