  1. What kind is better for making MPEG-2 (DVD)? I preffer compatibility.

    Both are fine, its only the video encoding... one is constant and therefore you have to pick a level that will fit. The other adjust and therefore can goto high bitrates when needed, or lower when not. If you going to be putting anywhere near 2 hours on a DVD VBR is the only way to go, it just takes longer to encode.
