    Hello
sorry for the question maybe trivial. I am ripping DVDs out of my LG DVD reader and my PC with WinXP.
SmartRipper warns me that my XP installation has no-ASPI, then suggests to play the DVD in order to unlock files. Once the DVD is played (with VideoLan), then SmartRipper actally rips the files quite fast.

The question is if this is the best way? or would it be better or advantageous to install the ASPI layer as well?

In principle I would not want to install redundant software and my DVD and CDRW applications so far work perfectly without the ASPI layer.
Both the DVD reader and the CDRW are from LG and brand new last generation.
    Does somebody have some advice?
    Thanks

  2. I had the same question about a month ago and never could get/find a reply to when ASPI is needed and really even what it is for. The only answer I got was that you don't need ASPI if you have Windows XP.

I get the same warnings about ASPI not being present when I rip a DVD, but have never had any problems.

If you get an answer I would be interested as well just from an education standpoint.

SCSI = Small Computer System Interface
ASPI = Advanced SCSI Protocol Interface

The ASPI layer is an advanced communication protocol between your computer's various hardware. In other words, it is how the "language" your hard drives use to talk to each other, to the ROM-drives, to the mother board, etc. Obviously it is essential that there be some form of communication between all of these or you could not move data from one to the other.
Windows XP provides a rudamentary communication protocol. For most hardware installations / combinations this is sufficient. In some cases, however, greater efficiency and therefore speed can be achieved with an Advanced communication protocol.
There are several software programs that actually contain there own specialized ASPI layer (I think CloneCD and Nero might do this, but I am not sure).
The bottom line is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". If the Windows XP built-in protocol is working for you, then you can simply run with it. If sometime in the future you seem to develope a communication problem between any of your pieces of hardware, then install the latest ASPI layer. Do a search for ASPI and you will find many places from which to download it or simply go to adaptec.com.

I don't need it in W2K for ripping. I need it for certain programs that burn, but not all.
