  1. I have been trying to convert some xvids to dvd compliant streams using Mainconcept's MPEG Encoder. Both of the xvids that I have tried, the video freezes at about the 70 minute mark but the sound continues on. Anyone have any ideas? I am assuming a setting is bad somewhere, etc. There are no bad frames, etc. I tried to convert to divx and it did the same thing. DVD Workshop will take the divx files and convert them to DVD compliant streams without a hitch.

    Thanks,
    Todd

  2. How do you know there are no bad frames? Even V-Dub MP3 freeze misses some bad frames. I know because I had it check a film after I changed the codec from xvid to divx. It reported no bad frames. I tried to encode the film in Main Concept and it would stop at the 60 minute mark. I would get an error message about the "wrong parameter." I encoded the film in TMPG and burned it to DVD thinking I had the problem solved. When I watched the film at the 60 minute mark (apparently where Main Concept stopped encoding) the colors of the film started to run and swirl. I thought I was back in the 60's watching a Jefferson Airplane light show. The characters also started to break up. One particular figure split in half, with one half walking across the screen while part of him stayed behind. When all of this good fun stopped and the picture righted itself, the film was about 5 seconds out of sync. My suggestion is to open the film in Virtual Dub and manually inspect the frames around the 70 minute mark which is where you said you experienced the problem. I did this with my film and witnessed the same "light show" I experienced on my DVD at the 60 minute mark. If you notice any bad frames delete them.

If you are running directx 9.0, that's your problem. MC reply from my inquery:

    Hello,

we do have problems with directX 9. We are working on a solution. The
next version of the encoder should work with DX9.

The only problem is they are taking their sweet time about it.

  4. Yep, running DX9. I found that DX9 and Media 9 work great for displaying interlaced videos properly without the blockiness or edge "jaggies" on my rig. I will have to keep an eye out for the correction. I was wondering why the mpeg encoder was so danged tempermental on my rig. I have had probs before but this one was really stumping me. Thanks!

Edit: As far as the bad frames, scanned and deleted a couple before this. But nothing even close to the 70 minute mark. Like I said, MF2 did just fine, but this 70 minute thing was just really bugging me. Thanks for the help anyway

You can get a directx unstaller program and then reinstall directx 8.1 It can be hairy though. search the web for the uninstaller. I installed directx 9a, but still no soap with the MC Encoder.
