  1. I posted a ripping problem that I'd had about a month ago about having trouble ripping whole movie *both were missing about 10-15 minutes of the movie at beginning and end* (many thanks to the 2 people who responded btw). Unfortunately I had to finally give up on trying to make copies of my devil's advocate and jason x dvd's and moved on to my others and so far hadn't had any problems ripping again until today. I'm not sure if there are certain dvd disks that are prone to problems but I bought one of those "best of" dvds which is not broken down by episodes but somewhat of a montage of pieced together clips of the show so maybe that's the problem, I don't know. I've tried both smart ripper and dvd decrypter but neither seems to work. I can't use dvdshrink because I don't have a dvd rw drive so I normally rip my dvds with smartripper, convert using dvdx, and burn with recordnow max on 2 cd-r disks. I've read through the guides and posts but haven't had much luck solving this prob. Can anybody else shed some light this time?

  2. You do not have to have a DVD burner to use DVDShrink. You can use it to rip your DVD and use DVDx the way you always do to make a VCD.

I still make VCDs even though I have a DVD burner and I use DVDShrink for both VCDs and DVDs. It's very convenient especially if I am going to back up my DVD to both DVD+R and VCD... I rip once but make both from the same files.

I had the same problem you are having (when I was using Smart Ripper)and at first I didn't know if the problem was with Smart Ripper or DVDx. I found that it was Smart Ripper when I successfully used DVDx and backed up a movie to VCD that I previously kept losing about 10 minutes of when ripped with Smart Ripper

Try ripping one of your 'problem' movies with DVDShrink and see if DVDx will then encode the entire movie for you too.

  3. Hello and thank you very much for responding to my post Jonas, but I cannot find the ripping instructions to accomodate what I need to do. They all are for ripping to dvdrw/r not to vcd. I even looked in the help files of the program when I downloaded it and still couldn't find the answers I'm looking for. The program looks simple yet still a little complicated given I'm still somewhat of a newbie when it comes to this stuff. I was totally lost with regard to setting compression levels as the instructions didn't specify which to use. Can you point me to the right instructional guide?

  4. As far as I know there isn't a guide for using DVDShrink for VCDs and you use it pretty much the same way as if you were going to make a DVD.

I'll walk you through my procedure step by step: (if I am unclear about anything just post back)

    01. Start by creating a Target Folder in which to keep the files you are going to rip from your DVD.

    02. Put DVD in DVD drive and close DVD player (mine starts automatically)

    03. Open DVDShrink 2.3 and click [Open Disc]

    04. Select the drive that contains your DVD, click [OK] and DVDShrink will begin analysing your disc.

    05. When it is done, click [Re-author] if you only want the main movie.

    06. In the bottom right hand box you will find 'Source Titles - Click & Drag!'

    07. Each title will have a size (in MB) listed. Choose the one with the greatest number of MB (most of the time it will be the movie only) and click & drag it to the upper left hand box under 'New DVD'.

    08. You may want to disable some of the 'Audio Tracks' and 'Subpictures' under 'Streams' (upper right hand box) at this point, keeping only audio track 1.

    09. Now click [Backup!] even if the bar at the top is still green AND red. (If you were going to backup to DVD+/-R you would not want to be in the red zone very far. Since you are going to be encoding for VCD it doesn't matter how far over you are in the red zone)

    10. If you get a message that 'Target DVD Size Exceeded' click [2. Backup this DVD to my hard drive anyway.]

    11. You will now be able to locate and choose the Target Folder you created earlier in step 01., click [OK] and DVDShrink will start ripping your DVD.

    12. Close DVDShrink once it has finished ripping your DVD.

    13. Open DVDx 2.2, click [Open IFO] and find the Target Folder which contains the files you ripped from your DVD.

    14. Select the first Vts_xx_0.ifo file and click [Open]

    15. Under 'Program Chain' you will see a box next to 'Index'. It will say 'Length' and if the number in the box is the same as the length of the movie, you have selected the correct file. If not, click [Cancel], click [Open IFO] and try again until you find the right file.

    16. Choose the same settings as if you ripped with Smart Ripper and encode your mpg file as usual for VCD.

    17. In the past, I have ALWAYS chosen 29.97 (NTSC) for my 'Output Frame Rate' but with some help from Adam (a moderator in this discussion group) I found that 23.976 (NTSC) is a better choice MOST of the time. If you do not know how to check to see which one to use, you can go into the 'DVD to VCD, SVCD' Forum here at dvdrhelp.com and read the thread titled 'DVDx - 23.976 (NTSC) or 29.97 (NTSC)' where he helped me out.

    18. Post back and let us know if this solves the problem.

  5. One more thing... don't worry about compression levels. Just leave your settings at 'No Compression' no matter how large the file is. The only time you would want to compress a file is to make a DVD 9 fit on a DVD 5. Since you will be using DVDx and encoding for VCDs you don't have to compress at all.

  6. Hi Jonas,

Thank you once again for your assistance, it's greatly and whole heartedly appreciated. Unfortunately though, it didn't solve the problem because I'm still missing the last 10 minutes of the movie. I even made sure to view the file that I selected in DVDShrink just to make sure everything was there all the way through to the end using the viewer in the lower left hand box. Everything was there but somehow didn't get ripped or didn't convert properly in DVDx. The movie is only 59min long and the cd-r disk is 80min so I know space isn't a problem as I am only burning the movie portion and not the menus and credits. Oh well, I guess I'll deem this disk uncopyable (if that's even a word), like the other 2

  7. Sorry my procedure didn't work for you... so far I have had great success with those "uncopyable" discs (since I stopped using Smart Ripper and using DVDShrink instead).

Good luck!!! Wish I could help further........
