some avi files preview in virtualdub just fine, but when I play in wmp the sound is out of sync. Also I have read how to and tried to resync using vdub and have yet to be successfull. Is sound out of sync a common problem for others or is it just me? Thanks.

Have you tried re-deriving the key-frame flags through the "Popup extended open options" menu of VirtualDub available when you choose File - Open?
This should do the trick.
If it doesn't, the easiest way of fixing it (rather than troubleshooting your player for why it doesn't like the audio format of the file you are trying to play) is to simply extract the audio to a seperate file, then use an app (I like HeadAC3he) to convert the audio into a different format. For instance, if is a VBR MP3, convert it to a CBR MP3, an Ogg file, or whatever you want, then Mux the files back together when you're done. This is an ideal solution if you only have one video file exhibiting this roblem, if it is more widespread, then I would try a different player first.
Hope that helped,
Prospero
