I need to determine if I have defective dvd-r:
A store bought DVD-R freezes during play back on my Toshiba SD2815 ( dvd-r compatable) but plays fine on my dad's computer dvd drive.
Can I find out anything about how a dvd-r was created by putting it in my cd-rom drine and exploring its folders?

  2. Me Too! I have a sony ns315 and a pioneer 104. I have burned about 30 dvd's, some have been re-encoded to fit a single dvd others have been just copied. I would say a 4th of them have problems on my standalone, they freeze and or restart to the beginning, they play fine on my computer however. If anyone knows if this is a player issue I would appreciate any info.

    Thanks

Mike, what kind of info are you looking for? There are many programs out there to disect dvd's (check out the tools section), but you'll need a dvd rom drive, I don't think you can use your regular cd drive.

I don't have a dvd-r drive so I guess I won't be exploring the disc - I'll get another dvd-r from a different sorce to determine if its my player.
The dvd-r was purched from Something Weird Video and its an exchange for another I returned that also froze-up, wonder if anyone else out there had trouble with SWV dvd-r's. Also the disc is purple, if that matters.

  4. It is the DVD-R itself.....not the Sony NS315, I have it and it plays everything.....it is most likely cheap or defective media.

  6. Thanks for the replies! I agree the media that I use is not top of the line, but what are the differences in a set-top players laser and that of a computer's dvd laser? One would think if it works in one and is compatible with the other, it should work. Does anyone recommend a player that has a higher compatibility? Or in other words, if I was to go buy a new player should I look at what type of laser it uses? Can you determine that?

  7. I have delt with this problem for a while. And among MANY discussion groups, I have yet to find the single fix for freezing DVD-Rs.

Most people say it's bad media and you should buy more expensive media. This, I have found to NOT be true. I've tried every media available and still get the same results.

Some say cheaper DVD players have trouble decoding DVD-R discs and run hot causing freezing. I put a fan in my player and still had the same problem.

It is NOT bad authoring. I have used every different software program I could find including 1 to 1 copies and still the same result.

My next step is to find a really good player to see if that helps.

I've researched this more than most people and haven't come up with a solution yet. So don't hold your breath too long.
