  1. Does anyone know of a way to take an MPEG, encode it some way, and burn it onto a standard CDR with some sort of encoding that DVD players will recognize it as a DVD, even though it's only a CD-R? I know if it was possible, I would have found something about it on the net, but just wondering if anyone knows how. Reason is that I've got an XBOX and an old-school DVD player that doesn't support VCD's and I'd like a way to play home-videos on these players. Any help appreciated!

  2. I think it would be possible to convert the mpeg files to DVD files using this program http://www.mediostream.com/products/neodvdplus/index.html then burn the files to a CDR using any burner program. Possible I think however I haven't tried it myself.

  3. You are talking about "miniDVD" or "cDVD". Search for these terms and you will find plenty of information on these.

It should be noted that miniDVDs work on very very few players.

Just about ALL stand-alone DVD players support VCDs no matter how old it is. Apart from the few specific units (i.e., the game consoles and the newer Apex units), they all play VCD. More likely than not, it may be a CD-R compatibility problem and to that end, it will definitely not play miniDVD (on CD-R) either.

  4. Well, we all know that XBOX's don't play VCD's without a mod chip.

And, my old-school DVD player is the first KLH DVD player made, so it's old! I picked it up at BestBuy for $70 like 3 years ago.

  5. VCDs predate the first DVD players by half a decade. Most of the really old DVD players I've seen still supports VCD -- but since they use first generation DVD drives, most don't read CD-R/W media well.

And yes, game consoles don't play VCDs.

However, as per my last post. miniDVDs work on very very few players and for them to do so, your player must at least be able to read CD-R/W discs well.
