  1. Everything I try to convert a video clip...to mpeg1...I get an error ..:
    Couldn't locate decompressor for format MP42 ( Microsoft High-Speed Mpeg-4 V2)

VirtualDub Requires a video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video.
Directshow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable..

Plz help ...this is the first time this happens..to me..

    Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem - I've installed all kinds of codecs but everything goes back to the "MP42 Problem".
TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 and VirtualDub are completely unable to open MPEG 4 v2 files on my system.
The funny thing is, Windows Media Player 9 is the only device that doesn't have a problem with videos that require that type of conversion.
And stranger still, TMPGEnc worked perfect until I installed Windows Media Player 9. :?
Thus my suspicion is that Windows Media Player 9 installed an exclusive MP42 codec that does not share with other programs.
Do you have Window Media Player 9, Qnzdj85?

  3. A registered version of Quicktime 6 will allow you to export the files as AVIs. Otherwise there are MPEG4 command line utilities tht can do it but I never got them to work. Also a GUI but it did not work either. I assume my problem was with the file I had. Quicktime worked fine.

I'm thinking you need an MPG4 codec from here.
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Install/8.0/WIN98Me/EN-US/wmpcdcs8.exe

D/L into a new folder and virus check it to be safe, I have not D/L'd this myself and cannot vouch for the site (although it looks pretty safe)

Or you could wait for another link, I believe Tsunami filter pack also has it

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Install/8.0/WIN98Me/EN-US/wmpcdcs8.exe

When installing it, make sure you just update not reinstall everything.

ABAB's codec link certainly solved my MP42 problem - Gspot concurs that I now have MP42 support. Also, VirtualDub will open the files it would not open before.

However, TMPGEnc still crashes when I attempt to "Source Range" the MPEG4 v2 avi. Yeah, yeah, I know I could frameserve off of VirtualDub, but TMPGEnc worked fine before on this same system....

Could it be my VFAPI priority settings? I have DirectShow up top with a priority of 2, but should I give a -1 to any of the other filters?

Or perhaps in my efforts to fix the previous problem, I installed one too many codecs. The present filter list as read by VirtualDub is:

    (Uncompressed RGB)
    Cinepak Codec by Radius
    DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion
    DivX MPEG-4 Slow-Motion
    DivX Codec 4.12
    DivX Codec 4.12
    Indeo (R) video 5.10
    Intel 4:2:0 Video V2.50
    Intel (R) Video R3.2
    Intel Indeo (R) Video 4.5
    Intel IYUV codec
    Microsoft H.261 Video Codec
    Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
    Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V1
    Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2
    Microsoft RLE
    Microsoft Video 1
    REALmagic MPEG-4 Video Codec
    XviD MPEG-4 Codec
