Hey guys. I have been looking for a few days to resolve this problem. I finally gave up and came here for help.
The problem:
I cant get Virtualdub to play the ac3 sound from a cut of a movie. I have installed the AC3 codec / filters. I have installed codec packs and tried different versions of vdub to no avil.
1- I launch virtualdub-MPEG2 1.6.19 ( build 24528 ).
2- File / open video file / select my vid which is in MPG format ( renames from .vob )
3. I then get the options to choose an audio stream. They are all "Dolby AC-3 Audio" with substreams ranging from 0x80- 8x84. ( i have tried all ).
4. I then select one and get the "timestamp" warnings.
**MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in audio stream 29 at byte position xxxxxxxxx, from xxxxxxx to xxxxxxx. This may indicate an improper join.**
5. I them click "OK" to get past this warning.
6. I push the play on the input side and get this
*** No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.
( source tag:2000 )***
Additional notes:
I am running vista ( 64 bit)
I have installed the Codec found at http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/index.html. I installed this by right clicking the .inf file and selecting " install " ( note: this does not work on 64 bit vista )
The same movie clip that I am importing into vdub plays fine in windows media player.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:
I just installed Virtualdub 1.7.2 and got the following error when I tried to open the .mpg file.
*MPEG Import Filter: Invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream*
I click "ok" and thats the end. I can try and pick another file at that point..
So the newer version did not help resolve my problem. -
Standard virtualdub doesn't support mpeg2.
What are you going to do? If you just are going to cut use something else like Videoredo.
Or else try virtualdubmod. -
I just DL'd and tried vdubmod. It simply does not play the audio. NO errors..
Video ReDo works for what I need. But ill be using the software for quite a long time and really cant afford to invest in software at the moment.
thx for reply ! -
VirtualDub uses the old ACM audio system not the more modern Directshow. You need AC3 ACM Decompressor.

This is the root of the problem ( i think). I am unable to get any newly installed codecs to show up in this window. I have lame installed and a few others. They are not here tho....
There is one called MPEG Layer-3, when i check the "show all formats" box , nothing is displayed in the window.
I read that using 32 bit codecs in a 64 bit os wont work. Is this the problem>?>
Please help... -
This is the list of codecs that shows up :
vdub%20audio%20codecs.bmp -
Did you install the Lame ACM codec? Remember, VirtualDub (all variants) requires ACM codecs, not DirectShow.
http://www.rarewares.org/files/mp3/lameACM-3.98b5.zip
After extracting the files from the archive right click on LameACM.inf and select Install. -
SOLVED! !!

I finally figured out the problem (after about 8 system restores after each failed installation).
For some reason, Vista had a block on the LameACM.inf, LameACM.acm and lame_acm.xml because the files "came from another computer". How silly... and there were no indication whatsoever that the files were being blocked. I so happened to right click and view the properties of the files and found that they were blocked. I simply "Unblocked" each of the files and installed it by:
1. Opening up a command prompt by typing "cmd" in the run box and pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter (to run as Administrator).
2. Changing directories to sysWOW64 ("cd C:\windows\syswow64")
3. Typing the following (example_path replaced with the actual path to the extracted files), then hit enter: rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:\Temp_Folder_Path\codecXXX.inf
big thx to all that responded! Things to remember:
1- unblock the files ( rt click / security )
2- run you cmd as admin

Ahh, I missed that you were running the 64 bit version of Vista. You're instructions should help out others with the same problem. Good job!
-
Vista's not all bad, just fairly difficult at times.
Vista 64 adds another level to the complexity.
I stuck with Vista 32bit as I wasn't impressed with MS's past handling of XP64. Both OS's seem like they have a ways to go.

Since this thread is marked as solved, should I ask in another thread? I'll just ask anyway and then you can tell me where to go.
(I don't have Vista. Recently changed XP Professional Sp1 to Sp2, though)
Here's what I've done so far:
DVDFab Decrypter (trial) I think I did main movie. ->
VobtoMpg ->
VirtualDubMPeg2
So, I'm in VirtualDubMPeg2 and I get:
No audio compressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag: 2000)
The error is the same wording as one of the errors j6044 got. First time I've used VDMpeg2 and I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if doing (I'd have to learn) what j6044 did would apply. What do you think? Even though I don't have Vista, could I have the same problem and if so, could someone walk me through j6044's solution?

hola!
So there still isn't a 64bit audio compressor for vista 64? I've been trying to install lame as you've described, but no luck yet. I've been having all kinds of headaches trying to install these, is there not an installation made yet that'll work for the 32-bit, or 64-bit lame codec in vista? I don't care what codec, I just want something that will compress audio in virtualdub. Preferably with an installer, not all this having to load your own codecs with rundll. Can't someone make it easy? I'll try again though with what's described above. Thanks! -
I got the same problem decoding the AC3 using virtualdub. I tried installing AC3 ACM Decompressor and I get an "installation failed" error. Why is that? How do I solve it?
I am using XP SP3 x32
