  2. Got one of these mirror dvd-r drives.

    Excellent drive but very basic.

Can only write at 1x but have had no bad disks.

    Very quick at reading dvd-r's.

However it doesn't seem to read original dvd videos.

Tried to watch my Lord of the rings and it wouldn't play in powerdvd.

I then tried to rip vobs and watch it from my hard drive but woudln't let me do that either.

It does though let you rip vobs from from a dvd-r and also lets you watch dvd-r films using powerdvd.

As I am not planning on ripping any original dvd videos I have no problem with the drive but if that is what you are planning to do then I would check this model does that but from experience I don't think it does.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply Timmy 4, However when you say it does'nt appear to read original DVD'S does that mean I can't back up my DVD'S or that I just cant play them with that particular writer.

  4. I couldn't get it to play or rip any original dvd film.

When I tried to rip the movie using smart ripper it said some files are locked. On this forum it says to unlock a movie, play it in power dvd, pause it then open smart ripper.

It tried this and power dvd locks up every time.

I also used dvd decrypter and it came up with the message
    CANNOT READ FROM FILE VTS_01_0.VOB
REASON: THE DEVICE DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE COMMAND.

So far I have not sucessfully ripped any orignal dvd film.

However, it lets me rip all the back up films I have done so it looks like this drive will not be any good to back up original dvds.

  5. i had one of these writers upto 2 days ago .. was impressed ... i didn't have any problems ripping movies with dvd decrypter ... although mine was locked to region1 .... i live in the uk... you dont need to play a movie with power dvd to unlock it so dvd decrypter will rip it .. played region 1 discs perfect with power dvd ... and to rip region 2 movies i have a toshiba sdm1612 set to rpc1.. the reason why i changed dvd writers was i needed a faster burner .. so i now have a pioneer 105..which also allows me to write to a dvd-rw which the mirror didnt ..
