  1. I recently bought a cendyne rive (pioneer 105) drive and have having nothing but problems with recording movies. I am using Khypermedia dvd-r disks from office max and have yet to make one successful movie.

I am trying to make a back-up of a single layer movie and have used both dvd decryptor as well as smart-ripper to extract from there I have tried nero, record now max 4.5 as well as a few others. The problem that I am having is that the data is buring onto the disk properly but is not playable on my compter or either of my standalone drives, a pioneer 333 and a apex 3120. However I can load the .vob files from the disks and the movie will play. This has been extremely frustarting to say the least as I dont know if it is a media problem or something I am doing wrong. I did burn in UDF 1.02 in Nero if that helps. Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thsi is the error powerdvd 4.0 gives me when trying to play a movie.

    Error code 890020003
The DVD disc might have been damaged so as to inhibit playback operation.

    Happy New Year

    best wishes,

you should get familiar with IfoEdit!!
Before I do the actual burning I load all .IFO files and GET VTS_SECTORS.
With the ripping and decrypting some info in the .IFO needs te be updated and GET VTS_SECTORS in IfoEdit does the job

  3. I am a bit familiar with the program and did do the get vts sectors that you mentioned. Is is required if only ripping a 4.7 gb movie? I did not think that it was. I have also tried dvd decryptor by making an iso file and burning it back which should be easy and straight forward and get the same results.Using this cheap media is it possible for none of them (out of 10) to work with movies.I ask because I put ice age on a dvd-rw the first night I got the drive and although I did not do it correctly I was stil at least able to load the disk, get the thx trailer and get to the menu. I have been able to get nothing with these disks. I really need to know if it is something I am doing or the disks, this is very frustrating. I am ordering some 2x accu disks from meritonline so hopefully they will work better. Does anybody else have reccomended media?

    Thanks for you help

  4. Your problem is the media probably, I had the same problem with those disks and my 105, After switching disc brands i have no more problems,i use maxell 2X but at 3.50 apeice theyr a little pricey.also iv noticed that apex players are a little picky about cheap dvd media

    Hi All.

I am using Khypermedia with my Pioneer 105 with no problem at all! I am playing them in a Panasonic 32...

  6. It's your media.

I bet you are talking about that 10 pack for $20.00. I got that as well when I got my CenDyne DVD burner.

Without a doubt it is your media. I was able to burn Ice Age, and a few more movies but out of the 10 only about 1/2 of them worked.

Get better media. Also, do not get the firmware upgrade on the a05 as it is buggy, esp. with Nero.

I am using Fuji right now and they are much better (but a bit steeper in price).

  7. it is definately the media, i bought two of the 10packs and only half worked...i made office max take them back....i lost tons of data due to these discs....i have used 15 other types of media and no problems

i even tried before and after firmware update! and no problems with nero 5.5.10.0 on my computer or standalone!

    hope this helps

  8. Well try out some DVD+R media, I am using the Ritek $2 ea and they work perfect and they play back in any DVD player I have tried even the players that are not suppose to play DVD+R and its worked with Nero, DVDxCOPY, DVD2DVDR with out a hitch, then again I am using a HP DVD200i, but the media should work in your Sony, if not then its the Burner, since I have allready used 100 in my DVD Burner without a prob.

  9. Thanks for all the wonderful help, I am fairly convinced that it might be the media all along as it sound ike others have had the same problems with that media. I placed an order for accu brand 2x disks so we will see if they are any better, I hope so. I did upgrade the firmware to 1.21 also, I hope I did not do more hamr than good on that. I was not able to find any media locally or I woudl have tried another disk, maybe tomorrow. If anyone has any other advice it would be greatly appreciated.

  10. @thxkid

He has a Cendyne (pioneer hardware drive) that is "-" compatible, not "+" like the media you list. True the sony would do either but he does not have a sony

  11. Keep spouting media all you want but I do not believe that is the problem

I also have the Cendyne (A05) Burner and I have been using Nothing but the Hypermedia DVD-Rs since I got it. I have probably burned litterally 40-50 DVDs with not one coaster.

I personally think that he is burning the movies in the wrong format. If it was the media, he would not be able to copy the files off of the DVD-R after the fact and play them

Kaos is right, so once more :

    1. with everything you rip, just use IfoEdit to GET_VTS sectors on all .IFO files and then re-save the .IFO files (sectors sometimes just DO change while ripping)

    2. I use Nero v5.5.10.0 in combination with my Pioneer DVRA05 writer.

    - Open Nero and select DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO)
    - Select No Multisession
    - Select ISO Level 1
    - Select ISO9660 and NO Joliet
    - Do NOT relax any ISO restrictions
    - Use UDF 1.02 Physical Partition (Do not force DVD Video compatability unless you ONLY want to use the disc on an X-Box)
    - Set the volume label (NEXTGEN in my case)
    - Select burn
    - Manually create an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directory
    - Drag the dvd files in the VIDEO_TS directory
    - Burn

Not a single coaster for me so far

  13. Thanks for all the advice, bought a memorex brand dvd-r disk and it plays perfectly on my pioneer dv-333 but will not load on my apex 3201 so I was doing things right all along but the media was bad. The above person might have just gotten lucky on all that media or I was unlucky with the batch that I got. At any rate it seems to be working ok now at least on my pioneer. I also bought a tdk brand disk I am going to try. Thanks again for all the help.

Where are you guys seeing firmware for the DVR-105? Looked at Pioneer's site and see upgrades for the 104, and the DVD-105S which looks to be a ROM drive not related, but nothing for the DVR-105 on the index page..

  16. I have a similar problem. I was using my friend's Pioneer A03 to burn DVD5 movies with Princo media and it worked ok with Nero 5.8. Now that I went out and bought a Cendyne 105( Pioneer OEM A05) drive, I burn 3 movies with the same media(Princo) and none worked eventhough the burning process were successful without errors. I use Nero 5.5.9 on my computer. I am thinking I will upgrade to the new firmware(1.21) and see if that will fix it.

    Please state your OS..
There are problems ripping under XP without sp1
that could cause the no playback problem

Try playing a VOB from one of the burned discs
with POWER DVD to make sure its burning the data , even if it won't play as a dvd volume

also MILLENIEUM has APSI problems which render your rips also useless in some configs
TRY ASPI TOOL or Adaptecs aspi fix
make sure you can play the ripped volume off your harrd drive from the IFO before burning

  18. what a load of rubish I have just read in this forum, Firmware,Nero version, aspi, rubbish rubbish rubbish
Take this as gosple I use both 104 and 105 burners plus panasonic standalone DVD recorder EM30 and have six different stand alone DVD players, There is only one problem disc compatability and player read abilty. In other words standalone players can only read the best quality discs, fact!. Yes some cheap brands will work in some players but even every disc from the same pack is not guarenteed to work, they and the player have borderline compatabilty, put a sucessfull recording away and 2 months later it may not work. The best and most compatable discs I have used and I have used at least 20 brands are Verbatim Datalife plus discs [http://www.cd-rmedia.co.uk/cgi-bin2/cdrmedia/details.pl?id=vdvd-r]
Next you do NOT have to use IFO edit on any single layer DVD rip.It is only used to correct sectors on an edited DVD rip (eg trailers special features removed etc etc) If it is a single layer DVD just use files not movie rip and select all files, then use latest nero select DVD video drop all files into video ts folder and burn.
The same problems you are all talking about occur on discs recorded on stand alone DVD recorders and they dont use nero, aspi or any other
    reasons you mention,
Just trust me use Verbatim DVDR's (cheapest from the link I gave you) and wait hopefully for super compatable discs to appear.

Sorry to disagree, but VERBATIM had the lowest compatibilty among
brand name media in the COMPATIBILITY study that the DVD industry follows.(http://www.dvdtoday.com/Recordable%20DVD%20Test.htm)

That is, VERBATIM is in fact very good media,
but not as good as the following top three brands for compatibility
    IMATION, MAXELL and MEMOREX

  20. Also disagree I use the $1 -R's Riteks in my DMR-E20 and they play in any thing I put them in and I am on my 4th 50 pack, I use the $2 Ritek +R's in my HP burner and its burned every 50 I put in there with only 1 defective one and the other 49 played in over 40 different DVD players including the panasonics that say they do not play +R's, I even use +RW's and they work in everything I have tried, though have not tried a pioneer yet.

Lately I have noticed this too - ever since I upgraded to a 105, the DVDs I burn with the Veritas PrimoDVD have less trouble in older or cheaper players. (setting aside for a moment that the cheapest players of all, Apex, can typically play anything.)

However with the current firmware, I can burn any old crap on the 105 and it still plays. I save the Mac discs for crucial archives and use Riteks and bulkpaqs for the rest. The last batch I bought was 4x from esbuy.com, they appear to be Ritek '04s, and they all burn PERFECTLY at full speed, and play perfectly in all my devices. At $2 each, not bad.

The bulk blanks I get for $0.80 are slower to burn and still reasonably trouble-free. But they wouldn't burn at all under the old firmware.

  24. I purchased the A05 drive (Cendyne 4X) a few weeks ago and have been enjoying the wonderful world of DVD. I noticed that some folks are blaming bad media (khypermedia at office max) for the coasters. I'm gonna say that I have to agree with the bad batch concept.

I bought 2 sets of bulk 10 khypermedia DVD-R's from office max. They all worked perfectly. I use nero express to burn my DVD-R's(mostly because I am lazy). I rip the main movie from DVD, use dvd2one, and then burn with nero 5.5.5.10.15 (neroexpress). Anywho I stopped off at office max and say that had the 5 packs for $5.00 so I bought them (waiting on the supermedia DVd-R's to get here) so I can continue backing up. EVERY on of the DVD's in the 5 pack are coasters (the 10 packs all worked fine).

I would get mixed results. Nero would say burned successfully, however, when I put it in my apex 1100 w, I could run through maybe 5-6 chapters and then it would freeze. I would then skip to the chapter before it froze and watch the rest of the movie. About 5-10 minutes after where the movie froze when I was going through chapters, it would stutter/freeze and then completely freeze with the image on the screen. I looked at the underside of the DVD'R's. On the good ones, you see a clean burn(groove marks), however, on the coasters you see rings at different points. I mounted the movie with daemon tools and it played just fine.

In the past, I used dvdxcopy, dvd2one and then nero, burned an image to dvd with dvddecrypter. I REALLY believe that it is the media (at least in my case).

I am getting ready to do a search, but does anyone know what the supermedia DVD-R brand here: http://store.yahoo.com/supermediastore/supdv100pac0.html

    actually is (i.e. rebranded pioneer)
