Hi all. I am starting to realize that this may be nearly impossible to do.
I captured a Star Trek Voyager episode to test my PowerVCR capturing at CVD resolution. It played fine so I wanted to edit out the commercials and I tried with the Trimmer program that comes with it. I notice that the first few seconds of the trimmed file has poor motion quality but it was fine before it was trimmed and gets better as the file plays.
I tried with TMPG and it looks better but from what I've read here seems to indicate that it shouldn't work either.
Is it the cutting or the stitching back together that causes the problems?
I also thought that I was having audio synch problems because when I opened the MPEG2 file with the default player, it was out of synch as the file played. However, I opened it with PowerDVD and it played great all the way thru (with the above exception).

I would like to do the same thing. Have you managed to figure out how to get clean cuts with a program like Primere? I have captured using MPEG2 also, and would like to get rid of some commercails now.
Let me know
thanks...

Premier is not a good choice, you will have to re-render the completed file. Most cutting programs I've tried don't do a good job with MPG2.
MPG1 video seems to be an easier format to trim.
If you can, capture in uncompressed or nearly uncompressed avi. Even MPG4 avi's will cut and render better then MPG2.
I know this is not much help

Try using the VirtualDUB mod that reads MPEG-2. Open the MPEG-2 file (will take some time as it is being parsed), and use the seek bar to find the parts you want removed. Mark the beginning and the end of each part and press Delete. This removes them from the output file you will be creating, not the original.
To save the edited stream, select direct stream copy for both audio and video (to avoid decoding and re-encoding) and save the file under a new name. This is fast (almost like copying the file).
I suggest you use VirtualDUB because I have done exactly the same editing quite often and VDUB appears to "respect" frame dependencies and won't leave stray frames causing the problems you mentioned. Drawback is you will not be actually cutting exactly where you want but on the closest I-frame.
There is only a case where you may have problems and it relates to open GOPs. I have not had such problems with PowerVCRs capture because I (assume) it uses closed GOP encoding.
If anything is unclear, please post again for clarifications. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
You must reencode if you are using virtualdub. It is not possible to select direct stream copy with mpeg1 or mpeg2 file(even with virtualdub mpeg2 mods).
try this cutter

I have not used MPEG2CUT, but from looking at their web site there are some items on it that you might be forwarned againt.
It appears like it only is supported on Win9xME.
I have no idead if it works on SVCD files are not. that always scares me.
There is a forum, but it might be better if you sppoke German, because I don't.
It look like the author of the product has split to his "real life". Here are his words.
So, this will be the final version of MPEG2Cut from me for a long, long time, as now I can live with it. If you want to hunt for bugs or improve it, go on, as I uploaded the source, as well. So what's new: I added experimental VOB and MPEG2 VIDEO only cutting support, ac3 playback, track selectioning while playback and made i/o buffer bigger while cutting to hopefully speed up things. Last, but not leat, now '0' and 'insert' will also start/stop playback mode.
I'd love to know the success anyone has had with this on use on OS that are running WinXP and Win2000 ?
Also, how it handles VBR files ?
