If you mean you have a widescreen AVI and you want to keep it as widescreen when encoded, you need to click settings then advanced and change the video arrange method to "full screen(keep aspect ratio)"
-
Think you can do that by using the resize filter in virtualdub and frameserving....turning a full screen movie into widescreen will make it look stretched and very odd though!....people will look short and fat
-
don't you think theres a better way to do it? one that will actually work? They must be a program that converts it for you.

I'm sure it would work with frameserving, but another way is to use Mainconcept encoder and under "details/advanced" you can change the aspect ratio to 16:9. I just tried it on a short sample and it does turn a full screen movie into a widescreen movie...but as i said, it does look odd to say the least!

Try resizing with a resolution such as 352x180. Resizing to 352x160 will look more widescreen.
Hope That Helps!!!:P

"Video arrange Method: Center (custom size)"

Could someone right me up some instructions for frameserving? Or perhaps give me a link to some? Thanks And whats "main concept encoder"? Where do I get it?

If you want to make a 4:3 Fullscreen into 16:9 Widescreen you will have to chop(not resize) the top and bottom of the picture to have a true widescreen image with the correct aspect ratio.
So if you have a 352x288 pal 4:3 footage it aspect is 1.22:1
So if you want to make it into a widescreen footage you have to chop
49 on the top and 49 on the bottom so your video will be 352x190 which is an aspect ratio of 1.85:1
So if your using TMpgenc you would goto the clip frame and 49 for top and 49 for bottom and add top and bottom mask.
Now for NTSC video which is 352x240 is an aspect ratio of 1.47:1
So in Tmpgenc you chop 25 for top and 25 for bottom and add top and bottom mask.
If you want an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 which 352x150
you should be able to work every thing else out
So i hope this helps
