  1. I want to buy a D8 camcorder to capture my old Hi8 tapes & also VHS to computer.
I want to use the by-pass method to capture the analog tapes as specified in the CAPTURE guide.

which model(s) can do this ?

Currently, my DV camcorder sony PC3 can't .

  2. I have a Sony TRV-730, it does a fine job. I'm using it with Adobe Premiere 6.5 and haven't run into one issue capturing and converting to DVD, VCD, or SVCD.

  5. thanks for your quick reply.
Now, I am more confident to buy one.

By the way, do you use Ulead video studio 6 to capture the analog video ?
or do you know any program that work fine with passthrough ?

    thanks

  6. The Sony TRV-350 has a passthrough feature.

But be careful some lower end models made by Sony do not have a passthrough feature. For example, the Sony TRV-250 and the TRV-140 do NOT have a passthrough feature.

I am still new at this ........but this works for me well.
I use ulead video studio 5 to capture. ( use the NTSC DV template) and it does a good job. I also use ulead to edit and for effects. I use tmpgnec to encode however, because you get more options for bitrates and motion search etc.....
I'm sure if you read the guides there are other options....however my discs come out looking very nice and it is easy. (they look as good as the original vhs tapes or close) good luck.

Be aware that some PAL version of Sonys don't support, eg TRV-18 (NTSC) does, but TRV-e18 (Euro PAL) doesn't. Not sure about the far east market.

I have a CANON MV 1500i and the pass through is excellent. The camera is cheap and I use DVIO ( look in "tools" )to download through a cheap firewire card. I am very happy with the result.
