A friend has a 100Mbps network and want to be able to write large files (100's of MB) from one computer to another computer with an internal DVD writer. Would a 100Mbps network be fast enough to keep up with the DVD writer (Sony DRU500)?

Would it be better to get the external version of the Sony and move it from computer to computer?

Yes, you can and fast enough to do it. You can access the other computer's shared drive directly or by map networking the other computer's DVD burner drive.

The DVD burner data processing will be slower than the network speed. Copying data from one computer via 100Mbps network into another computer's hard drive is much faster than into a disc.

I've done this with my CD writer from another computer copying data and no problem up to half a gig. The same can done into a DVD writer.

I thought that DVD processing speed and writing to a DVD disc was at a high rate than 100Mbps. People tell me that there were no DVD external drives with the old USB 1.0 or 1.1 because it was too slow. The new USB 2.0 and Firewire are at 480 to 400Mbps.

How about network traffic, would other users on the network cause problems, or the buffer in the DVD writer would be enough?

Has anyone actually recorded over a network with a DVD writer?

    Garfield -

You are talking of two different things, the network data transfer rate and DVD-R/DVD-RW data transfer rate.

The DVD disc data transfer rate is so much slower than the network and you are dealing with a maximum speed of 4x. This is the equivalent of around 2-3mbps on a DVD disc data transfer rate compared with a network rate on a minimum of 10mbps to a maximum of 100mbps. This is why data transfer is much faster from a computer into another computer's hard drive than into a disc.

Other users will clog the network, so after hours is best. I also suggest transfer large amounts of data through the network into the other computer's hard drive first then into the DVD disc later.

Of course you could still do it directly into the DVD-R or DVD-RW disc and this would take a while.

You shouldn't have a problem when the network is quiet and this depends of how much data to transfer. May take only a view minutes to 30 minutes or longer, good luck.
