  1. What are some of your favorite movie scenes that really 'show off' your surround-sound system? These would be scenes where the different channels are really used to the full effect!

    Two that come to mind:

THE MATRIX: Near the end, when the bad guy is firing shots at Keanu Reeves, the famous slow-mo scene where he's bent backwards and the shots are 'tearing' thru the air. The bullets whizzing by from front-to-back, alternating left/right channels, very effective.

SPIDER-MAN: The scene on the rooftop where Spider-Man is just waking up after being gassed from the Green Goblin. The gas is just wearing off, and we hear the Goblins voice coming from all directions at various times. Very creepy, if not psychodelic!

  2. The Matrix - When Trinity and Neo are walking through the lobby and they encounter the security guards / swat team on their way to rescue Morpheus.

Top Gun - Any of the fighter jet fights but usually the big end one.

Star Wars: Ep 1 - The battle scene

  3. gladiator, fight at the begining in DTS.

Swordfish, when the ballbearings mines go off, Near the begining.

Bourne Identity - Gun fight on the staircase at the end.

Ice Age, the glacer breaks at the being

    Mostly all jurassic parks.

Even though I'll never sit the the entire movie again I have to agree with Top Gun, it was the first movie I ever watched at someones home with surround and to this day its the classic example I think of.

The Untouchables: The scene where the baby cariage is going down the steps. Lots of gunfire in slow-mo, and you can hear bullets and brass hitting the floor and 'tinging' around the room.

  6. Some of you may chuckle at this, but I really like the Quiddich scene from the first Harry Potter. You can feel the other players fly by you, and it sounds excellent. Can't wait till the second one comes out!

  7. Chapter 2 of Swordfish - the big shoot out at the bank.

  8. Don't laugh - the beginning of Rustler's Rhapsody. Why?

Because it starts off with "mono", then moves to "stereo", then moves to "surround sound". It's really cool for showing someone the differences.

  10. I used to show the beginning part of Saving Private Ryan but now I have been using scenes from the Episode 1 and 2 (I really like the pod race scence).

I also like the dts promo. The one that has some swooshing in the rear speakers and then the cd explodes and comes up with the logo.

  11. One of my favorites is the 'seismic charge' from Episode II. Other than that, the best has to be the 'bullet-time' effect in The Matrix. BTW, did anyone else hear that The Matrix(II and III) trailer during the super bowl was broadcast in 5.1 surround (HD broadcast obviously).

any xbox horror game in 5.1

I have 5.1 for games, not movies. I mean sure, it is nice for film, but I was fine with 2 speaker stereo.

but in games. woo baby. to hear a door open behind you and breathing over your shoulder. now that is what it is all about.

i get away with pretty low-cost speakers, since I am not going for loud explosions, gunfire, etc, - I need very few watts to provide the sound of zombies moaning behind me.

Evil Dead 2 when the spirits are banging around the room. The sound literally hopes from channel to channel and it is in the direction they are looking. Also, when they all look down, the sub gives a little boom.

Episode 1 - When the Gungan battle is about to begin and the cruisers that hold the driod armies are creeping across the plains, it sounds like a dump truck just pulled through your living room.

  14. We should also include best bass scenes to demolish your neighbor's house with :P

But I would have to agree that the beginning of Saving Private Ryan is pretty kickass. But if you have heard either The Haunting or Fast and the Furious in DTS, you will immediately worship the greater diety that is DTS (or DTS-ES in the case of The Haunting) :P

  15. Best bass scene would have to be the sequence where the Titanic sinks in the film of the same name. Lots of creaking and banging. A great film for surround sound effects, but sadly very few scenes of naked breasts. Perhaps we should have a topic concerning the most artistic use of tits in a non porn film. **** it, lets just talk about tits, which are much nicer than frivolous sound effects.

    1. Obi-wan & jango's chase through the asteroid field in Episode 2
(the shots come from all channels & the seismic charges really
    rumble from the sub-woofers.

    2. The "They're all gonna laugh at you" scene from "Carrie"
(all the taunting voices alternate between all the channels)

    3. The rain storm scene in "A Bug's Life"

    4. The first 20 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan"

    5. The opening battle scene of the new "Terminator" Special Edition
(this is the best cause you can show people the difference by toggling
between the original mono and the new dolby digital.

    6. The Podrace scene in Episode 1

    7. The Hoth battle scene from the episode 5 special edition laserdisc

  19. This is not a movie, but I have this CD da that is good to see if you have quality speakers. Crappy speakers cannot play some sections of the songs.

It is the aboso!ute sound Hearts of Space
Song number 4 is good. It is Sagrada Familia : Robert Rich. In the beginning of the song bells are ringing at high frequencies. The bells are at such a high frequency; it is almost impossible to hear on most systems. That was true at that point in time. Tried the CD da on my computer and I could not hear the bells. On my Prologic setup I heard the bells easily
