  1. Hi
First thing first, I am not a newbie to digital video, and have searched this site, the forums and google but not found anything specific to my problem.

I have ripped a DVD to my hard drive with Smartripper. The rip was succesful, as i can preview the video in DVD2AVI (ver. 1.7).

I can save the project in DVD2AVI, giving me the .d2v and audio files.
I am using the latest version of tmpgenc (ver. 2.510, downloaded today)

I have not moved any files (vobs, ifo's, d2v etc) from where they were created, i have tried copying the DVD2AVI.vfp file to the tmpgenc folder, checked the 'register TMPGenc.vfp to VFAPI' option in TMPGenc, and tried raising the priority of the dvd2avi stuff under TMPGenc's envirnmental settings.

Having done all this, when i open the .d2v file TMPGenc pauses for a little while, then comes up with the 'program has caused an illegal operation' message. If i click close it then politly tells me 'file whatever cannot be opened, or unsupported'.

I have a fealing this may all be down to settings caused by older verions of TMPGenc and DVD2AVI (well, actually a newer version of DVD2AVI, which i deleted after dicovering ver. 1.7 was 'the last stable version'), because they leave files on your computer somewhere (after deleting both the old TMPGenc and DVD2AVI, and reinstalling new TMPGenc, it new my mpeg 2 trial had expired, and looked for DVD2AVI.vfp, before i even reinstalled the DVD2avi program).

If anyone can help, or even just knows how to remove ALL traces of TMPGenc and DVD2AVI fro my system so i can start from fresh, please reply to this post, or email acid512@aol.com.

    Cheers

  2. ho!
i'd like to know where tmpgenc stores its info

but i think i can help on this...
    1) you could try going back to dvd2avi 1.76
    2) you could try to disable the direct-show VFAPI plugin
    3) dvd2avi leaves no files on your computer, it don't even have an installer
    4) the reason tmpgenc looks for the dvd2avi VFAPI plugin is, that the information about VFAPI plugins is stored in the registry.
you can try searching the registry for "vfapi", "tmpgenc" oder "dvd2avi".
    (start->run...->type "regedit"->enter)
    5) the VFAPI-stuff is really simple.
dvd2avi and tmpgenc register their own VFAPI plugin everytime you run them.
there is a "register to VFAPI" menu-item in dvd2avi as well.
just start the version you want to use, make sure that the "register..." menu-item is checked, and you should be fine.

if it STILL does not work, ... i'm afraid i can't help you.

    bye,

  3. Cheers, i was beginning to think i was stuck on this one.
As 'luck' would have it, my pc commited suicide whilst burning a data cd, and i ended up formatting the hard drive.
Problem solved, but i dont intend to do this every time something simular happens, so thanks for the suggestions
