  1. I used to use a WinTV PVR for recording SVCD / CVD's and Windows media player 6.4 for quick playback to review the recordings. I also had PowerDVD 3 installed. This is all on Windows 98.

After a problem with the WinTV, I uninstalled the WinTV software and PowerDVD completely. I have now re-installed the WinTV stuff followed by PowerDVD and there's a problem- The MPEG2 files don't play back properly in Media Player!! The sound is normal but the video looks like it's in slow motion and they're not together. The files DO play OK with PowerDVD, but I just want to click on the file and get it to play in the media player- Plus, my nanopeg editor relies on Windows Media-based playback.

This must be something really subtle because it USED to work great. Any thoughts??? Thanks.

  2. An update on this problem- The problem seems to be that despite the fact that I have mpeg2 codecs installed on the system (WinTV playback and PowerDVD codec), Windows Media Player 6.4 is not accessing and using these codecs, so it's playback of my mpeg2 captures is bad. Any help?

  3. fire up graph-edit, render the file, and see which mpeg-2 decoder filter is used.
then uninstall the program that installed this filter.

it would be sufficient to decrease the priority of this filter, but how that could be done is beyond my knowledge...
    might as well be impossible

EDIT: you have NOT installed any mpeg-2 codecs, it's mpeg-2 filters, which makes a big difference, since
    1) there is no mpeg-2 codec (WFW) i'm aware of
    2) the mpeg-2 filters are direct-show filters, and the automatic selection by the graph-builder (part of direct show and used by media-player) is kind-of crap.
the dvd-player app requests exactly the one filter it "knows" and therefor it works.
