  1. I see that VirtualDub is licensed under the GNU General Public License and the source code is available... No one thinked to port it on mac system?!

This a REALLY REALLY usefull sw!!!

I see a lots of peole involved on developping software for Divx and so on all of them based on the SAME encoder: mpeg2enc.
So I say: nothing new to the horizon... The only ffmpeg would have been enough... (it works great!)

Don't you think that would be better assembling the efforts on porting what we (mac users) really need/lack? A sw like VirtualDub (able to pre-process the movie with a lots of filters) is only an example for what I mean...

I think there's still a little gap between us and pc due to the lack of a bunch of basic softwares...

Important Note: I'm not a troll and I don't wanna start a flame. This is only a free consideration. And sorry for my bad english!

It would be easier to write a completely new program than to try to port a x86 program written exclusively for windows (it is not even compatible with x86 Linux due to the language it was written in). Not to mention that it uses windows codecs exclusively.

Also, Virtual Dub, for lack of a better term is a childs program (don't get me wrong, it is very good work). Sure it may be adequate for windows users, but the general opinion on the mac side (from what I have heard/seen) is that we don't care that much about an outdated video container from the 80's (aka. AVI). Sure divx is nice for video, yet it is better in a QT/MP4 container where it isn't as (for lack of a better word) crapified.

We aren't using mpeg2enc to make divx. We are actually using ffmpeg/mencoder to make divx files.

My f*****' english... I knew that would be hard to make me understand!

I'm totally agree with you about AVI format: it's outdated and heavy. But that's not the sense of my post... The heart of the matter is not VirtualDub but what it does!

You said that it's a childs program: ok (probably you get used to work with FCP and other expensive softwares...), but NOW there's not on mac a *free* and *easy* to use software wich gives a variety of audio/video filters like virtualdub!
But we have a lots of "encoders" wich do the SAME things... (no need to list them, I suppose...)
This is the sense of my first post.

    Good night.

Just a note: I never said that I wanna do a Divx...

are you actually trying to sound like a Mac snob or are you just ignorant?

What makes you think that the population of users of any particular OS platform can be quantified as simply as saying "Windows users don't mind outdated technology but us Mac users just don't tolerate anything but the best"?

We are not saying that we only accept the best. The best would be raw streams in no container, with no compression. An indefinate sized file...

As for the best, it would be better to consider using a .mp4/alternative container as compared to...something that resembles avi (the avi spec does not allow many things used in it today). The very fact that it needs to be hacked for DivX(tm) and other video streams, shows how badly a new container is needed. Mac users use .mp4 and .mov containers...although .avi's remain in use by Windows.
