  1. using dvd studio pro, i'd like to create a menu with motion buttons...when i try to do this however, all i get is the video playing in the background of the menu...is there a way to make the width and height of a mpeg 2 video smaller than 720x480 so it doesn't take up the whole screen? that way i can have more than one motion button playing at a time...i know this probably sounds confusing, but i'd appreciate any help on this topic...

  2. I have yet to create a motion menu myself in dvdsp but my guess would be that you should use a program like Final Cut Pro to compose the menu (by taking the multiple clips and laying them out (and scaling) in position within the full screen design). Then export from there as one complete clip and overlay the buttons in dvdsp.
    Hopefully that made sense.

btw...if you haven't already tried, the Discussion forums over at apple would probably yeild more answers.

The way to do this is to composite the video first in QuickTime Pro or Final Cut Pro, export as mpeg2, and then import into DVDSP and set as the main menu asset. First, make a 720x480 pixel, 72 DPI background still that you would like for the menu, and save as a QT importable format, such as PICT. I usually put a 5-10 pixel black border around a blank rectangle where the video button will go. Import this still into QT Pro by choosing 'Open Image Sequence' in the 'File' menu, and give it a length of 1, 5 or 10 seconds per image. Then, open the video you would like to use as a motion menu button in QT Pro, choose 'Get Movie Properties' in the 'Movie' menu (command-J), select the video track in the pop-up menu, and set the right pop-up menu to 'Size'. Adjust the size to the blank area you left in the still for the motion menu button. Then select the video you want to use as the motion menu button (must be the same length as the still image sequence, so copy and add the image sequence to itself until it is the length of the button video desired, which must be a multiple of 1, 5 or 10 seconds, whichever you chose), copy it (command-C), and add it scaled (command-option-shift-V) to the image sequence. Then, you get movie properties on the image sequence movie (command-J), choose the video track you just added to it (should be #2 at this point), select 'Size' in the pop-up, hit the 'adjust' button and position the video to where you would like it to be on the menu. Repeat for all the buttons. Then, select all the video, and add it to itself until it is about the same length as the theme song you would like to play while the user is choosing the menu button on the DVD, or just a little longer (ignore if you don't want background music in the menu). You can now export the motion menu movie as MPEG 2. Then, create a button overlay image containing the 5-10 pixel borders you placed around the motion menu buttons, flatten as a single layer, and save as PICT. Now import the m2v motion menu, pict button overlay, and ac3 or aiff music into DVDSP and set them as the proper assets, and you should be groovin'. Happy burning.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  4. thanks for the help artroom, weasel...i greatly appreciate it...just wondering tho, following your advice weasel, when i go to export my movie after moving the video sequence over the outlined black rectangle and setting my buttons up and all, it doesn't export the whole video, just the image that is shown on each video...so the file size is very small compared to what it should be...any ideas? ..maybe i just need to play around w/ it and see what i can figure out...

  5. just a quick follow-up: i misread the a part of your advice, weasel, and was setting the image sequence at 29.97 frames/second when it should of been so many seconds/frame (i.e. 10 seconds per frame)...stupid me, i should just slow down and think about what i'm reading =\ ...thanks again...
