Hey. I am right now really pissed off. I've always used Tmpegenc for DVD-SVCD conversion. I converted X-men using CQ 2500 kbps and quality 65 which gave me excellent quality, no singe macroblock whatsoever.

BUT, now, I am trying to convert just one scene with a lot of movement from Terminator 2 (the scene where Sara's dreaming about her own death, when a nuclear bomb explodes and scatters her and a city, and some playing kids), just because I know this scene has a lot of movement, yeah.

Anyway, I tried the same settings as I've used before, and I get hell of a lot of macroblocks! The fastest action scenes in X-men didn't have ANY blocks and it was crystal clear, crisp and .. just excellent.

So I even tried raising the quality to 100 and used motion estimate blablabla highest quality, but that didn't work either. I even raised the bitrate up to 3000 kbps .. but there are still macroblocks. OK, not as much as before, but they're there, and I think it's really strange since X-men didn't have any at all, and there are many action scenes..

    What am I doing wrong!?

  3. What other programs do you need to get your ripped dvd ready for CCE?

filter and frameserve: AVIsynth or VirtualDub
    video encoder: cce
    audio encoder: tooLAME
    multiplex: bbMPEG

  5. Let me add that you might want to try TMPGencs 2pass VBR at a high bitrate OR CCE's multipass VBR. Normally if I'm doing something in CCE I really like I'll set it to 3pass VBR. If you're only doing a short scence you can try 4pass (or what hell even 5pass )

Yeah I tried CCE, used 4-pass VBR and there were terribly much macroblocks..!
I was using 2.5 SP or something.. perhaps the latest version is better?

Latest version 2.62 isn't better, but it doesn't matter because v.2.50 is superb.
Something you are doing wrong, sure. You may post the details, maybe someone figure it out.

OK. Source is DVD - Terminator 2 special edition
It's 15 seconds, a scene where Sarah Connor is dreaming about the future, when she gets blown up by a nuclear bomb along with some playing kids.
That scene has lots of motion.

    (clad DVD for ripping DVD)
DVD2AVI to make a dv2.. used force film.
I don't remember what the program's called, but it makes an avi out of a dv2.

Then I used virtualdub to frameserv, using resize (480x480).
Loaded the avi into CCE 2.5 SP.

I used 4 pass VBR, 3000 kbps max bitrate (yes! I even used a higher bitrate than SVCD standards and there was lots of blocks). I don't remember what the average bitrate was but quite high...

Hm I think that's all I can remember, does anyone see any obvious mistakes that could have made the macroblocks disapperar?

When I loaded the dv2 into tmpeg and used SVCD template (NTSCfilm) CQ 2500 kbps and quality 60 or 65 the quality was a LOT better, but there were still some macroblocks...

Everything seem to be OK. I don't know, what is wrong here.
However, I converted T2 to MPEG-2 480x576 VBR 4pass 1530kbps (min 1000, max 2450) with cce sp 2.50 and got very good quality, no macroblocks at all. Sorry, I have no idea.

Well.. hmm OK I suppose trying again wouldn't hurt? Using your settings.

But the minimun bitrate.. is there any point of setting it to 1000? (couldn't it be 0?) Just asking.

    here is the email address.

    Thank you much.
