  1. Well I have tried just about everything I can think of to back up my dvd's. I have tried Smartripper, DVD Decrypter, Dvd X-copy and nothing is working. My problem is that when I start to copy from the dvd, I get to a spot and the programs stop responding. It seems to be the same spot in the movie every time. I have tried about 8 different movies. I don't have anything running in the background, plenty of disk space. I am using a HP 200i to read the disks. When I playback the movies using the HP 200i, they play just fine .

    Please can someone help.

    Thank You

  2. Well, I just purchased a 200i and I'm having the exact same problem. Seems unlikely that no one has addressed this in the 2 months since you originally asked the question, so I guess I'll look around a bit further.

Clearly, others are ripping from 200i drives, so there must be a solution.

  3. Hmm I seem to remember having the same problem and I believe I used a little utility called "Force ASPI" and that fixed it. I don't recall where I got the utility program sorry.

  4. Hmmm... our issues must be different if Force ASPI was your solution. I already have the Adaptec (and Nero) ASPI layers installed, so Force ASPI doesn't look like it will do anything for me.

I've only tried 3 different discs thus far. I may play them in my standalone player to determine if perhaps it is the layer change that's causing the drive to choke.

There's nothing of any use on the HP site, apparently.

Indeed HP DVD writers truly do suck

Take it back to where you got it and swap for a good DVD writer like the pioneer, sony or teac.

  6. Well, you get what you pay for, right?

The good news is that I have achieved success nonetheless. I updated both my ASPI layer (Adaptec 4.71.2 on XP) & drive firmware (to 1.51) which seems to have helped. Then, using the "scan the chapters to unlock the drive" trick mentioned elsewhere, I was able to rip a whole disc.

HP's bundled RecordNow app still reports "no compatible Recorder or Rewriter found" when I try to do anything with it, but who cares -- I've got Nero.
