I just can't seem to get a good SVCD from an Xvid source.
I've tried upping the Direct Show priority but this just results in jittery video...so I thought why try to use an Xvid in TMPGenc?... I can convert the Xvid to DivX with Virtualdub in about an hour, and the sample I've created by doing this makes a nice smooth SVCD...can it really be that simple?...or am I missing something...I haven't done the whole movie yet so if anyone knows a reason why converting from Xvid to DivX is a bad idea I'd be interested to know

  2. Converting from Xvid to Divx in vdub is re-encoding. Anytime you re-encode you are going to lose quality. Converting from divx to mpeg will lose quality again. Thats why extra encoding is not generally recomended.

If you are having trouble persuading TmpGenc to correctly encode xvids, try frameserving them from virtualdub. There is a guide on that here:

Cheers Bugster..I had a feeling it wouldnt be that simple!...yes to be honest I did notice the video quality was not quite as sharp after converting to DivX...nice and smooth though... I'll try the guides again as you suggest and see if i can crack Xvid to SVCD direct.

Transcode to HUFFYUV instead of DivX if it's the only way you can get it to work. You willneed a spare 40 GB for the file :P

Hufyuf is great for intermediate steps in the process. I was also using DivX (with quality set to 2). Results were good, but I also was worried why movies were so smooth and flat (while the original was sharper).

I am now using HUFYUV to convert ripped m2v files using VirtualDUB and then feed them to CCE for final encoding. Ofcourse, 40~60GB to spare is a must.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
