For the information of others,.. I just ran a test on a small DVD movie where I set the new option size in DVD2ONE to 800 MB, with the goal of putting the movie on a CD but leave it in DVD format. It worked just great and the quality was a real suprise to me. It is better than any SVCD that I have tried to create using either TV or VHS as source and using the capture via ATI card.
The movie I used was only 1.25 GB to start with,... 44 min of video.
Good job DVD2ONE!!!!
Edited on February 27, 2003. Sorry for misleading people. I jumped the gun much too fast. While I was successful creating the FILE of the movie that played fine on my PC,... I've not yet burned it to a CD. See my post much farther down. I need to find some software that will burn a MiniDVD. Nero won't do it.
Final Edit: February 27, 2003. After searching through all kinds of sites, I found some guides for creating MiniDVD's but that was only of limited help. They all involved all kinds of other software guides pre-DVD2ONE being available. The key to being successful was just the simple information that you can burn the MiniDVD video in UDF/ISO format in Nero. Since I only have some very old CD-RW disk of 650 MB size, I re-ran DVD2ONE and set the video size down to 625 MB. This is much smaller than the 800 MB file I first created,... but it was the only CD-RW I had available. Once transcoded by DVD2ONE, I used Nero in CD mode, selecting CD-ROM UDF/ISO, MOde 1, no multisession, no Joliet, no exceptions. It recorded without error and once burned, played "Mostly" OK in my APEX 1500. There were several sections that had "Skips" which seemed to be missing multiple frames or repeated frames, or still frames. In 45 minutes of full audio and video there were about 10+ of these skips. I'm not sure if it was errors on the CD-RW or the Transcoding. However, the quality of the rest of the video and audio was superb. After looking at the video a second time, I now think the skips are actually just my Apex DVD player loosing sync with the speed of the CD and jumping back to play the frame again. I did not see pixelation in any of the movie.
I'm going back now to re-transcode the movie into 800 MB and see if that helps. At least I am convinced that this process will work and is very simple. I have checked on the VCDhelp site to see if my DVD or CD recorder will burn 99 min CD's, but there was no answer.
As others have indicated, this would be a great way to make some very low cost movies. Don't get me wrong. Any good quality movies I rip will go onto HQ 4.7 GB disk in full DVD format.
Hope this clears up any issues I've created.

You know I was looking at this site that has 90 (80min) and 99 minute (870min) CDR's http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/9099minutes.html
Now that would be a nice trick if one could get a good quality movie on the 99 minute media. Does anyone know if a standard CDR burner will work with these 99 minute CDR's? -
You can only burn a cd-r with more capacibility for example 99min cd-r only if you have a cd-writer that supports overburning option infact all data you write that exeed from a standar cd-r (for example700mb) will be burn in overburnig method..
I had some problem with this tipe of cd becouse the video (it was a divx in this casa) freezed in the end where was burning in overburn.....
so you can try i'haven't already tryed with a dvd format in a cd with more capacibility -
Interesting but how do I find out if my burner supports overburning? Maybe I should just buy some of the 90 and 99 minute CDR's and give it a try since RecordNow Max says it supports overburning.

It would be cool if the bitrate could be limited too. If we could stay within 2744kbps then a huge number of players could play it.
Then it would be easy and fast to make (X)(S)VCDs with 720x(480/576) video, which IMO can be quite good if encoded well at 720x480@24fps. -

What mode would you burn it in to play a mini DVD in a stand alone? Would it be plain ISO?

I've used this method to create XSVCD's and mimiDVD's. If your source is a DVD there are problems. An XSVCD is going to have such a high bitrate that very few DVD players will play it back without severe stuttering. I converted some Farscape TV episodes to XSVCD and thay had a peak bitrate of 9000. MiniDVD has to be burned in UDF/ISO mode 1 which limits you to 700MB. I've had more success createing minDVD this since if your DVD player supports miniDVD it will be able to handle the high bitrate. It would be very nice if the author of DVD2ONE could incorporate a bitrate limiting option in the program.

Wulf109,... Your note said that you have had more success burning miniDVD's than XSVCD. What software did you use to burn? Did you use CD-R or CD-RW? Were you using UDF/ISO mode 1? Was your burner in CD mode or DVD mode. For Nero, at least the new version, it won't let you burn a CD media in DVD mode, and in CD mode the only options are SVCD, or VCD, unless you use UDF/ISO CD-ROM.
I will update my previous post to make sure people understand that the files I've generated in DVD2ONE were only tested on my PC and there they play fine. I've asked this question before,... why can't software like PowerDVD (with the ability to play just about anything) be included in home DVD players? This would really simplfy a lot of things. I'm sure that my low cost DVD drive is not any better than the DVD drive built into my DVD stand alone player.
I've looked in the Help forums and only found one guide on how to burn MiniDVD's, but it is not correct. The steps it shows don't work in the new version of Nero. It will never let you put a CD media into a DVD burn mode. You get an incompatible media error."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
I burn miniDVD with Nero 5569 in CD-ROM UDF/ISO Mode 1 on CDR 700MB.

Wulf109, Thanks for the info,.. but after searching around through this forum I found the same answer. I edited my post at the top of this thread to update my findings and I mentioned that I had some skipping when I dropped the size down to 625 MB and put it on a CD-RW disk. The skipping occured in my APex 1500,..but when I just played it in my brand new Daewoo 5900 DVD player, there was no skipping or any other problems,... the movie was terrific.
I am now going to finish this job by re-doing the transcoding back to about 690 MB to leave room for the other files and see just how much will over burn. Also, this will be on a new PNY 80 min disk. I see no reason why this will not be successful. If there is anyone out there that has experience with 90 0r 99 minute CD's we all would appreciate your input."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
Before moving on to dvd-r i used nothing but 90/99 mins cdr's (infiniti) for over-burning with nero for my svcd & cvd's all without problems. After moving on to dvd burning i have changed burning software from nero to recordnow max 4.10.I am currently transcoding Eight Legged Freaks with 6 ch audio down to 900 mb if plays fine in power dvd xp i will try to overburn with recordnow max.I may run into problems though as all my previous overburns were with my LG burner, not sure yet if the Pioneer 104 would support overburning.I may have to swap back my LG for my liteon 163d to do the burn. Will post back results later........Spaceman
Well the transcode came out at 979 mb after setting it at 900mb,so will try again setting it at 800 mb..... -
Spaceman,.. When you did the 90 or 99 min CD's in overburn, do you remember how many MB were you able to burn in Overburn. I know this specific to media and to drives. I'm using an AOPEN 2412Pro DVD/CDRW burner and it always says it has the ability to overburn but I have not data on how much it will overburn without crapping out.

Was that a miniDVD you played on your Daewoo 5900?? I'm very interested to know if the Daewoo 5900 supports miniDVD.
99 minute CDR's have a capcity of 870MB's in mode 1,990MB's in mode 2 -
Wulf109,.. The CD I played was burned in full DVD format as the output was the direct output from DVD2ONE. All I did was select a movie I had on my harddrive, which was IMAX BLUE Planet, again, not a very long movie, about 1.3 GB, and transcode it through DVD2ONE. Then the output was burned via Nero onto a CD-RW disk, using UDF/ISO mode 1, with all other options turned off. Like I said earlier,... my APEX 1500 had some problems playing it, and had several periods where it lost sync and had to play the frame over (which looked like skipping but was actually an attempt to replay the frame) sometimes 2 or 3 times. Finally it would get past a spot and play fine for several minutes and then hit another one.
In the Daewoo drive, it never had one sync problem and I think compressing the movie down to less than half of the orginal size is amazing. I just don't understand how DVD2ONE is doing this. I know a little bit about MPEG compression. I designed and build the first hardware MPEG 2 decoder card built by IBM and received a patent on the over all process of using standard IBM processors and Hard Drive systems to deliver MPEG movie streams in "Movie on Demand" telecommunications systems. I've very familiar with real time hardware MPEG -1, 2, compressors for live broadcast. Once a program stream is created, anything that messess with that stream, or any I frame, b frame, or P frame, or any part of the bit rate will loose total lip sync with the audio and destroy the results. What they are doing is a mystery. Of course I've been retired since 1998 and while I try to keep up with the changes in the industry, I can't figure this out. I guess that is why I'm retired."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -

This is really not overburn for the disk except for the 30 sec you added, but overburn as far as the CD-R drive is concerned. Of course this is all wrong if you were using 90 min CD-R.
I just finished using DVD2ONE to re-transcode my movie to 780 MB (Disk value) but Nero shows it as 703 MB. It would not let me burn this until I enabled "Overburn" and set the red line to 720 MB. Once that was set I did a simulation and then burned. All went OK. However, now that I have a CD-R and tested it in my APEX 1500, I get virtually the same results I had before. I get frame errors (which just show up as frames stopping and repeating for a second or two) and then it continues. It seems to only happen in section of themovie that have difficult images, like large branches of a tree blowing in the wind. They were not just simple macroblock errors that create pixelation and error recover, but more like track errors or large block errors. The pictures of earth taken from space seem to be the most difficult since just about every pixel on the screen is changing in every frame. Another funny thing is that the screen jumps only seem to occur on the bottom half of the tV screen, never on the top.
Playing the new CD-R on my Daewoo 5900 was no problem, no errors, no skips or jumps. I believe that the difference is in the ability of the players to handle the peak bit rate changes. The Daewoo does not specifically say it supports MiniDVD, but it does say it supports 8mm , 12mm DVD, 12 mm SVCD, DVCD, MP3, HDCD, VCD, CD-DA. Somewhere in all of this must be support for MiniDVD since it is playing one right now."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward.
