  2. Did you look to the left under DVD reviews and DVD Hacks There's a loop menu to select region, but not for macrovision. To disable macrovision you have to go to setup and switch the output

(eg. you have composite output, select component, then select composite again. This will turn off macrovision. Have to do this everytime).

I bought mine just before Christmas (a black one).

It has no macrovision protection when I copy a DVD via the composite output AND the SCART output. I haven't tried the S-VIDEO yet.

I heard that if you update the firmware to the latest version it will enable macrovision so I'm not gonna update until I know for sure that it wont.

Anyone know how to find out what version your firmware is ???

  4. From http://www.cyberhome.com (for the 500 mind you):

"To display the BIOS version of the player after the update, press STOP - SETUP - goto OTHERS - VERSION."

That menu option does not exist on the 402.

Maybe the way to do it is to open up the box and connect the DVD drive to the PC's IDE and power cables.
Then see the firmware version using DriveRegionInfo on the PC.

    Has anyone tried this?

You can see your current firmware version via the "Region code hack". Selecting Version in the hidden menu, the current configured region and the firmware version are shown.

    Regards.

  7. I have read the reviews on this player but I would like your opinions on it. I was going to buy this exact player and would like to know if it is a good buy. In your experiences is it good? I don't really care about the macrovision. Thanks for your input.

  9. I've got the 500 and my cousin has the 402. Both are really nice players. Speaking about the 500 it plays anything I give it: VCD, SVCD, xVCD, xSVCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW.

I made a xSVCD at 4000kbit/s video and it played it no problem. However, I mostly only make DVD-R discs these days.

The region loop menu works (japanese and hong kong discs play for me). It's a really nice solid cheap player. Much better than my Apex AD600A which I had before. Recommend it highly.

If it also played divX (mpeg4) then I would want one too.

The 402 is a great player. It'll play my mp3s, jpegs, vcds. It'll even read dvd-r and dvd+r. I bought one in December for only 40 bucks at this electronics store(It isn't a major retailer, it's basically a "Ma and Pop" store.) and I'm really happy with it.
