The new version of DVD2ONE allows you to set the output size of the file. It is possible to to make excellent quality SVCD's with this feature. I used some 45 minute TV episodes as the test. Loaded each episode and converted to an 800MB VOB file. Demuxed, converted the ac3 to mp2. Remuxed as an SVCD stream and burned on a CDR. Results are outstanding.

Hi, all
Converting the way mentioned above would create a XSVCD and not a SVCD. Since DVD2One doesn't change the resolution you'll end up with DVD (720x576) resolution and not SVCD (480x480).
I can imagine the quality being great. And this is indeed a nice solution for those who can play these XSVCD's indeed.

Why not just leave the output of the DVD2ONE alone in 800 MB. It is fully DVD compatible and will play fine. DVD format will accept AC3, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 audio, but since it comes out DVD compliant, why change it.

I just ran a test to use DVD2OnE on a small DVD movie and put it on a single CD. I just set the option size to 800 mb and selected the movie, which was 1.25 GB. It took about 10 minutes to do the transcode and the results were great. I could hardly tell the difference. I'm sure if I put this on a very large screen and had did some pause and looked close at the image I would see artifacts. Playing it in full speed I didn't see anything.
After all, US TV is at 30 fps, European Pal is at 25 fps,.. and movies are at 24fps. This tells me that he human eye can't see the difference,.. that is if 5 or 6 frames are missing out of every second of video, you would never notice it so long as there is no jerking or shifting of the movie.
The point is that a little pixelation will probably not be seen.
I'm very happy that I can do this because there are plenty of other things I now feel confident of putting on a low cost CD and have close to DVD quality.
My point in the previous post was I didn't see the need to demux any 800 mb movie and attempt to convert it to sVCD or anything else. Just leave it in DVD format. Works for me and is a lot less work."Technology",...It's what keeps us all moving forward. -
If you leave it in "DVD format" it will be unplayable on most DVD Players. AC3 audio is not supported by SVCD or VCD. I've tried it on DVD players that support raw mpg playback and they won't play the ac3 either.

If you put the 800MB DVD encoded file onto a CDR in the proper menu format you fould have a miniDVD. Most standalone players will not play this type of video disc (see the DVD Players section for those that do).

If you intend on making CDRs that will play on PCs then this method may be a good way of making such discs very inexpensively. It doesn't have to be commercial content either - if you make a DVD quality video on your own and it is between 800MB and maybe 2 to 3 GB you could use the usility to shrink it to 800MB for CDR and most likely keep most of the quality.Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'
