  1. Is the AX an upgrade of sorts from the A?

Does anyone know what the difference is between the two??

    Thanks!

If not mistaken, one is an EIDE burner and the other is a firewire based burner.

Sony sales advised me the only difference is in the software supplied. I have the AX and Windows XP recognizes it as a DRU500A-unless someone else knows different

    Sorry ... you are...
DRU500A - first version of internal burner
DRU500AX - new generation of internal burner
DRX500UL - first version of same as DRU500A in external case (USB2/FiriWire)
DRX500ULX - new generation in external case (USB2/FiriWire)

    Some more links

  7. I have DRU500A in external FireWire case and 1.0f firmwrea. So it is almost DRX500ULX

This way I can move it back to PC if I want. But that is only excuse why you shouldn't buy exeternal version. Since my was bought during biggest mistakes that Dell.com made for $280 and case was $50, my final cost is $330 for external version

I love this burner. I like that I can burn cheap 1x -R media and during may test burns I can use 2.4x +RW media. And if somebody decides one day that any of these formats die.... I still can burn the other one. Or if +R will be cheaper than -R .....

That's the same thing I did (great deal!), same things I do, and the same logic I use!

  9. my understanding:

500A is first gen ... does +r at 2x unless you upgrade firmware then 4x
500AX is 2nd gen...does +r at 4x out of the box. That's why the sony firmware website says the upgrade does not apply to the 500AX.
