Both of your suggestions worked regarding ULead burns not playing sound in my stand alone DVD player.
I have a further question regarding what R. Simandl wrote:
" Just remember to change it BACK to bitstream when listening to studio DVD's, or else your 5.1 channel Dolby Digital system will give you plain ol' Pro Logic."
My player has the following settings:
PCM Down Conversion on/off (on now)
Dolby Digital Bitstream/PCM (bitstream now)
DTS Bitstream/PCM (bitstream now)
MPEG Bitstream/PCM (PCM now)
Is your last statement about changing the MPEG back to bitstream still true considering the above settings? Or, will the DD and DTS settings override the MPEG setting when I play "studio DVDs"? I take it that studio DVDs refers to store bought DVDs not exclusively DVD-audio.
Again, many thanks for your suggestions.

Hm... R.Simandl will have to field that one, since I've never tangled with any of that. My "home theater", such as it is, consists of a 27" Toshiba TV, a Sony receiver, and a pair of 1970's-vintage Pioneer 911 speakers, so I've never even looked at the surround-sound options in my Apex player.

Your player has an option for "MPEG-Bitstream/PCM" on its own, other than dealing with AC-3? That's a new one on me. None of the players I've owned (mostly Sony's and Toshibas in region 1) have had that option.
I'm gonna guess you've now got your settings right and can leave 'em that way.
To make sure, play a DVD-R with MPEG audio and make sure it plays through your audio system.
Then, without changing any of your player's settings, put on a studio-encoded Dolby Digital 5.1 channel DVD. If your audio system is giving you 5.1 channel audio, then you're good to go. -
R. Simandl:
I did a test last night with the Star Wars I pod racing chapter. Since I got the 5.1 separation, I would venture that everything is OK. The sound was evident from the rears and it did traverse left to right, or as the scene required. I take it that this is what you were concerned about in your previous post. In other words, I think that 5.1 is working even though I left the MPG setting on PCM.
Thank you for your assistance.cai -
