  1. Hi, i was wondering a couple of things:

    1. should i bother investing in a Dazzle DV BRIDGE?
    2. does anyone know where to get one cheap on the net or in toronto ontario?
    3. are there any alternatives to this hardware?
    4. are there any alternatives that do the same but cost less?

    thanks

  2. Most people will recommend the Canopus ADVC-100 over the Hollywood DV bridge.

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  5. I have the Hollywood DV bridge and haven't had many problems. Only major problem I had was when the tape is not pristine and it jumps (or tracking isn't set perfectly on VCR) the Dazzle will drop the non-pristine frames. I've found that using an older "non auto-adjusting" VCR actually prevents much of the frame drops. But I have not used the other products to compare which is better.

  6. I have been using the DVBridge for awhile now. Happy overall. Don't use the software that came with it. Occasional drops from my system - using the ground loop fix seemed to help. ADS Technologies just came out with something similar.

I find the Dazzle DVBridge... adequate, but prone to annoying behaviors.

One: It contains a Macrovision-detection circuit which is prone to false triggering on bright flashes in the picture (such as explosions) or sync instabilities (such as can occur on 10-year-old VHS tapes originally recorded in 6-hour mode on a 2-head top-loading VCR).

Two: It occasionally disconnects itself from the IEEE1394 bus for no particular reason I can determine, which usually results in a "Failed to build a preview graph" error in ULead Media Studio Pro and a corrupted AVI file.

When it works, it works pretty well... but if I'd known it was this twitchy, I'd've bought the Canopus instead.

  8. I agree with Solarfox on the DV Bridge. When it works, its great. The ground loop fix is to take a small piece of fine wire and connect the outer shell of the powercord (where it plugs into the DV Bridge) to the outer conductor of the Firewire connector. Once I did this I found it disconnects far less often.

Some people also say using a good UPS can help as well.
