Does anyone have any pointers as to where to start to setup a live streaming server (capture on Win2K w/ ATI AIW), encode to Mpeg 1/2 or 4 real-time, and streaming it from a Linux/BSD box?
I'd like 'open source' or free utils. I just want to do it for fun, not profit.

These formats are not well suited for realtime streaming (except for perhaps extremely low quality MPEG4), because of the bandwidth requirements. Even commercially maintained websites generally download the entire file prior to playing if they intend to use the MPEG format. Your best bet is to use Realmedia or Quicktime authoring tools.

Well, I realize they need decent bandwidth.... the streaming is to be on a 100 Mbps LAN, so that's not the problem.

100 Mbps LAN? Why even bother with streaming? It won't take long for the silly thing to simply transfer to the client.

Because I'm trying to stream a live source in real-time, and want to be able to have it viewed as its happening, rather than having to capture, store and have it downloaded.

That's no simple task, and you almost certainly won't be able to do it for free. You're looking for professional quality broadcasting equipment, basically. Best of luck to you, it's certainly out of my league!
