I have downloaded an XviD movie which is an AVI that I can not burn with Nero. Although Nero can burn AVI's, it can only burn DivX AVI's. Just remember that DivX and XviD are two different codecs used to create an AVI file. I want to burn this XviD as a VCD or SVCD so I can watch it on my DVD Player. Even though my DVD Player (Panasonic RV-31) only reads original DVD's and VCD's, it can not read MPEG2 svcd. However, adding a DivX AVI file to an SVCD complication in Nero will make it work. Nero will take a while to encode the AVI file but it works fine on the DVD Player.
I do not want to convert the XviD to MPEG because it makes the video less clear. If someone can tell me how to convert the file to MPEG without loss of quality, then my problems would be solved much easier. I do not want to convert the XviD to MPEG2 because my DVD Player can not read MPEG2 SVCD. I have already tried the VCD Header trick which does not work.
Using Virtual Dub, I have opened up my XviD AVI file and under 'Video' I selected Full Processing Mode. Under 'Audio' I selected Direct Stream Copy and AVI Audio. Now back under 'Video', I clicked on Compression and changed the codec to DivX 5.0.2. After going to 'File' and saving the new AVI, the process begins but a few seconds later, Virtual Dub freezes and crashes. What should I do?

Take a look at the left hand column of this page and start clicking on some of the links you find there, read a few of the guides about converting xvid and/or divx to VCD/SVCD/DVD and maybe you might learn something.
There is no need to convert your xvid to divx, use TmpGenc to convert it to mpeg and then Nero to burn. Nero's encoder is Very poor.
BTW, you WILL lose quality doing any conversion. How much you lose depends on the tools you use and what setting you use.
BTW2, the RV31 DOES work with the VCD header trick but it struggles to play any SVCD (with the header trick) where the bitrate goes above about 2500. -
Okay, first of all I have already tried the links on the left column and I did learn something. I have learned that the methods do not seem to work for me. I have tried BeSweet or headac3he and plugins as you can look on this page: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/140703.php to see what I mean.
I do not want to convert the Xvid to MPEG1 cause now I can't even get the TMPEGEnc Plus to do that anymore. I have done it before. And what else is bothering me is that now I can not even play XviD movies. I have the XviD codec installed on my computer and now everytime I try to play it, my computer gives me an error to send an error report.
And by the way, how do you get SVCD's to work on your DVD player? When I do the VCD Header trick, it only tells me to select an MPEG2 file so how do I change the bitrate? Thanks a lot for your help anyways. -
hbkhhh69, DivX and Xvid are practically identical. They both use a variation of MPEG-4. When you drag an divx AVI, or an xvid AVI into Nero, your letting nero encode it to MPEG whether you realize it or not.
I see three posible causes, off the top of my head, that could cause your problem.
Codec problem:
Open the file using GSpot (find it in the TOOLS section to the left). It will tell you if you have the correct codec installed. Just because you can play it does not indicate that you have the necessary codecs to convert/decode it. Make sure you have the necessary Audio codec as well. There are variations of versions of each codec. It's possible you may have installed version 5, but don't have the V3 slow motion codec (this is only an example).
Corrupt AVI:
Could be causing your problem. Assuming you have all of the codecs, open your DivX/Xvid in VirtualDub (also found in the Tools section to the left). Select FILE | FILE INFORMATION. Look at the Video and Audio codecs. Make sure it doesn't report the audio as unknown. Last but not least, select VIDEO | SCAN VIDEO STREAM FOR ERRORS.
Corrupt Install:
Your Windows environment could be unstable. Any number of things can cause this, from improperly removed software, corrupt media player files/support files, bad codecs, hacked codecs, etc. Uninstall any software you've recently put on your PC, up to the point where it seemed to stop working. This type of problem is much more difficult to troubleshoot. Write down your error, and search the support.microsoft.com site.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -

DJRumpy: All right I have finally figured it out. I have downloaded the Nimo Lite Pack which includes an XviD codec that I already had, but this Nimo Lite Codec Pack comes with an AviC (FourCC Changer). With this I opened up the XviD file and I changed the FourCC to DIVX. It started to work then. I did not have a corrupted file and I did scan it with Virtual Dub. For the audio compression it said Unknown Tag 2000. I scanned the VIDEO file and there were a few bad frames. However, that was before I changed the file to DIVX with the FourCC Changer. So after it was changed, I could then convert the XviD to a real DivX AVI file. In other words, I have found out the real conversion for XviD to DivX. Thanks for your help anyways.
Bugster: I have already tested out your method with the SVCD's before. I opened up MPEG TOOLS in TMPEGEnc and I multiplexed the video and audio, selecting MPEG1 Video - CD (non standard). After it was done being multiplexed, I opened up a VCD compliance in Nero Burning Rom. I unchecked 'Create STANDARD compliant CD'. After it was burned, it played messed up on my DVD Player as usual. I even tried this with a lower bitrate SVCD MPEG2, but it still doesn't work. Can you tell me what else I should do? -
hbkhhh69, if your were getting an 'Unknown' tag for your audio in VirtualDub, then your missing a necessary audio codec. The AVI FourCC Code changer allows you to change the FourCC code in an AVI file. The FourCC code is the identification key used by the AVI format to specify which decoder to use for the AVI file playback.
Changing the FourCC code is only useful if you are using a slightly modified codec of a currently encoded file (in this case Xvid), a codec which shares the same compression algorithms (MPEG-4).
How many audio channels did the AVI say it contained? What did GSpot report as the audio codec?Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
