  1. I make vcds for my son and was wondering if I should start making xvcds so we can watch a better quality video. I tried to make an xvcd bt couldn't get tmpgenc to make it.

    I have a few questions

    1. How do I get tmpgenc to make a xvcd? Is there some way to unlock it so I can adjust the bitrate?

    2. Will I see a noticable diffrence between vcd (1150kbs) and xvcd (1227kbs)

I also noticed when I used the bitrate calculator that I could get a svcd at 1227 kbs (same movie)

Is there an advantage to making this an svcd over a vcd?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Listen, I am at work (well, so to speak since I am spending my time reading this Forum) so I can't tell you for sure BUT...
In my version of TMPGEnc, there is an "EXTRA" Templates directory containing amongst others an unlock.mcf

What you do is your load the template you want to use - let's admit it's VCD. Most options are greyed out - you're unable to open them. What you then do is load the unlock.mcf and bingo ! The base values of the mcf you loaded first are unchanged, but all options are opened and you can start having your fun.

I will try and mail that thing to you tonight

    Cheers

  3. hi.
what omicron says is true, you have to load the "unlock" template to change the bitrate of the vcd template and make a xvcd.
but i have to tell you: making a xvcd at 1227 kbps doesn't provide so much more quality than a standard vcd and you lose compatibility (maybe your standalone player doens't play xvcd).
svcd at 1227kbps absolutely don't do it, too low bitrate, to get good svcd you should go over 2000k (around 2300 would be good enogh); this is because svcd has higher resolution (pal is 480x576 while pal vcd is 352x288) so you need much more info = much more bitrate to get good quality of image.
i suggest you to try standard vcd using some noise reduction (if source quality is not so good) and, under other settings, check the box "soften block noise. try and let us know.
i'm sorry for my terrible english, i hope i could help you.
    cheers, jeremy.

if you're going to start making XVCDs go to www.kvcd.net, it's more complicated than just increasing the bitrate, and is not as compatible as an XVCD with just a slightly higher than standard bitrate, but if your player supports it you should use it as you will get a much better quality result.

  6. Well Thanks for all the responses

It sounds like it's not really worth it too make a xvcd.

The only reason I asked is because I wanted to make a better quality 1 disc . I want to be able to put a movie in for my son and not have to go in there in change to the second disc halfway through the movie.. For myself I make2 disc vcds and I just started making svcds (now I have a fast new computer)

    .

Can you explain what this means. The sourece is dvd rip . I rip them to vcd so if my son gets a hold of the disc he doesn't ruin it.

What does soften block noise do?
    Is it for video quality?

    Thanks again guys

That's what the movie looks like on one CD.
Make sure you use WinDVD or PowerDVD to view that.

Yes A picture is worth a thousand words but I can only come up with one
    WOW

That looks great! I have a couple questions
    1. What template is that?
    2. How do I figure out which template to use ?

I have a pioneer 434 and in the compatibility chart it says I can use xvcd and svcd up to 2500kbps

So all I have to do is use your template and the programs that I already use to make my KVCD (xvcd)

    Thanks in advance
