    Hi.
I am trying to convert a SVCD to VCD. I was converting it with TMPGEnc and it seems really slugish. In DVD2AVI it said 29.970 FPS and FILM so when using TMPGEnc I used the NTSCFilm template, but my vids seem really sluggish.

Was I suppoesed to use NTSC or change the framerate to 29.970 from the presetted 23.976 FPS?

I guess what I'm asking, does NTSC or NTSCFilm decide what video is needed for converting or does that only rely in the FPS? So should I go by the FPS or the type?

    Thanks, Mike.

If the source is 23.97 fps, in TMPGEnc just load the NTSCFilm template, which has the 3:2 pulldown flag enabled. I didn't quite understand your first post properly, so sorry if I've just told you to do something you've tried - to me it sounded like you had used the film template but also changed the framerate to 29.97.

Sorry, Uh no. In DVD2AVI it said that the Source Video is 29.970 FPS however underneath that it says Film.

So my question is which one do I use? Select NTSCFilm (23.976 FPS) or NTSC (29.970 FPS) or do I select NTSCFilm and change the FPS to 29.970?

    Thanks.

    Ah, sorry.

I don't use DVD2AVI, however, I would guess that you should use the Film template in TMPGEnc, as the 29.97 fps DVD2AVI was giving you would probably be after pulldown.

Try using NTSCfilm, if you can see jerkiness in the video, change to standard NTSC.

  5. I don't know if I am right, but try this:
Don't check Forced Film in DVD2AVI and generate d2v normally. Open TMPGEnc, select d2v file and use VCD NTSC (not Film) template.
    Or

Check Forced Film in DVD2AVI and generate d2v normally. Open TMPGEnc, select d2v file and use VCD NTSCFilm template.
    I hope it works.

My experience says (correct me if I'm wrong) that Forced Film is a advantage when we're doing a SVCD and we use NTSC Film template with the option "3:2 pulldown when playback" selected. So, we will have better quality and faster conversion and internally the result will be 29.97 fps interlaced. But for VCD I don't know if there's an advantage using Forced Film unless we use NTSC Film Template. In this case, resultant file will be 23.976.

  6. This applies to all progressive (FILM) source wether your output is intended to be VCD, SVCD or DVD.

In DVD2AVI if it says source FILM or FILM 95%, etc. then select Forced Film option and save project. In TMPGEnc, under Source select Progressive (Field order has no effect on progressive source). For Output (Video Tab) select 23.976 fps, Encode mode select 3:2 pulldown on playback. This way there is no framerate conversion. The pulldown flags are inserted and the player will add the necessary frames for a 29.97 display.
I've come to paint, but I've forgotten my brush.
