  1. Hi,
I have been using tmpgenc to encode dvd's to svcd's or cvd's. It works fine and have made many svcd and cvds. I have been using the mpeg2tovcd method to convert the dvd's found here https://www.videohelp.com/mpeg2tovcd.htm which is similar to dvdcam's method found in a earlier post. I use this method as it's the only way to get the video off my hitachi mvdz200 dvdcam. I receently have been using puertorican138's template to encode cvd's.

My problem is that when i try to play the svcd's and cvd's in my standalone dvd player, a singer sgd001, they play jerky. The picture quality is fine but the motion is suttery and object become a bit blured when moving. I'm puzzled as my dvd supports most formats including cvd and svcd, but when i put the disk in my computer the picture is just fine . I have no idea what the probelm is. I've tried cvd's to avoid the problem but it's still the same.

My computer is a athlonxp1800+ with 512mb RAM running winxp. I use VCDEasy or Nero to burn.

I think i've covered everything but if i haven't plz ask and if u can help in anyway plz do . Thanks in advance.

  2. Is your source video PAL or NTSC, are you using a template with the correct framerate for your source video.

Maybe you're using a too high bit rate? Usually, DVD player drives are 2-spin, setting a "physical" max to the bitrate that can be used in a CD based mpeg.

i use the templates in tmpgenc for pal as that is what my tv is.

    mats:
i use a bitrate of 2520 as is set by the templates in tmpgenc

can anyone provide reasons why suttering or jerkyness occurs

OK, you use PAL SVCD template, and if your player supports SVCD, then that should be fine. I've heard tho, that not all players with SVCD capability can play SVCD's with max bitrate. Try lowering to somewhere round 2300 kbps total to see if that helps. Also, is your source material PAL too? If not, you either have to do some frame rate conversion, or select the template that fits your source material. My PAL DVD Player/TV has no problem playing NTSC SVCD. Frame rate conversions can be a hazzle...

  6. thanx mat for ur reply but i have tried lowering the bitrate to 2300 but the same jerkyness still occurs just with worse quality picture . Ive aslo tried VBR and CBR which doesnt make a difference.

The source is pal also. The procedure is pretty close to lossless. I was wondering if burning the movies on to cd-rw is a problem/not advised. I'll check this out but my dvd can read cd-rw. The reason i use them is because i use them for testing my movies.

I think you may have a point with your concerns about cdrw and should at least eliminate this possibility. my player dosnt like them and gives some strange playback problems.

  8. Thanks guys for ur help. Using cd-rw's does not make a difference to to the flickering. The problem was to do with field order . I simply switched the field order from bottom to top and they played fine in my dvd player. woot!!!

Hope this helps anybody out there.
