  1. Pinnacle Studio 8/Ulead v6. Tried to transfer from my digital camcorder via Firewire to computer running Windows XP. looks fair on the moniter, but when transfered to cd or tape it shows bad blocking, also cannot get it back into my JVC GDV 7 camera, starts to load for about 5 seconds, then screen turns blue and will not load anymore. This is my 1st try at editing and am sure I must be doing something wrong. Have tried with both programmes but with the same result, any idears whats going wrong! many thanks in advance.

The steps involved are: (1) capture, (2) edit, (3) encode, (4) author and (5) burn. The capture (step 1) is basically a copy from your DV through your firewire to your computer harddrive and is stored as an .AVI file. I used Studio Digitial Video (SDV) 7 to capture and edit my home videos. I save, or render, the edited video as an .AVI file. I then use TMPGEnc to encoded it to either MPEG-1 (for VCDs or XVCDs on CD-R) or MPEG-2 (for DVD on DVD-R). I then used VCDEasy for VCDs or XVCDs and Ulead DVDMovie Factory for DVDs to author and burn the home video. I've found that TMPGEnc does a much better job than SDV 7 in encoding VCDs and XVCDs. Just a suggestion you might try. Also, in terms of recording your edited video back out to your DV deck ... you might save the edited video as an .AVI to your computer Harddrive and then record that to you DV deck. I've found that if you have a lot of segments in your edit that that may cause problem in trying to record back to your camera. Good luck.

  3. Many thanks rkr1958 foy your well laid out reply. I have downloaded TMPGEnc 2.510 freeware from their site, when I unzip it does it automaticly install with the rest of the codecs,so its there to chose from. Also my computer has a main 40g hard disc + a 80gig partitioned second disc, 2x40gig. The system is XP Home edition, 1400 Athlon, upgraded over windows me. Its still on Fats32, will this cause any problems! Also have 64MB Nvida Geforce2 MX (128 BIT bus)-TV out. Sorry but this is all new to me but trying to learn what its all about.

So how do you know that it has bad blocking on tape when you can't get it in tape ? Is it possible that you camcorder doesn't support recording back ? Just a thought.

  5. Sorry, I tried it to CD (blocking), so I then tried it to VHS tape, but still blocking. Very new to this, and after buying Pinnacle Studio 8, it looked straight foward,(just a few mouse clicks and your digital film is on CD), but after many hours work, poor results, must be something I`m not doing right, but I`ll get there in the end, I`m 60ish now so hoping to make that perfect CD/DVD before I make 70, regards and thanks to all

  6. You will be happy as soon as you move to DVD.

I use PS8 for my home video and it looks great on DVD. Maybe by encoding with TMPGEnc I can get better results, but who cares. PS8 is godd enough.

For some more info about PS8 look here:

  7. I could find your JVC GDV 7. Is it correct model name ? I was looking in www.jvc.co.uk

Look here if your model supports DV In. As you can see only few does.

Believe me, it was all new to us once ... and I still have a LOT to learn. Just keep at it, visiting this site, and reading the guides to the left an in no time you'll be a Pro.

If I remember correctly you extract TMPGEnc to any folder you choose ... once extracted just double-click on the exectuable to run it. If you are missing any codecs then you might want to check out www.vcdhelp.com/tools#codecs , which is located under Tools (Useful software) to the left <<

I'm running with W98SE which uses FAT32. FAT32 limits the maximum file size you can have to 4-GB. This really hasn't been a problem with me except that it limits captures from my DV camera to my harddrive (which is in .avi) to 18-minutes or less. Another problem I've run into, which I think is a W98SE and not a FAT32 issue, is that I cannot "drop and drag" in Windows (i.e., copy in Windows) files larger than 2-GB. I have to use DOS (i.e., command prompt) to copy these files.

If I'm understanding you Nitrox you're simply trying to get from DV camcorder onto CD via Firewire.

I'm doing the same. I also use Ulead Video 6, but with Win 98SE. I'm a newbie so I'm still learning hard. Everything I know so far I got off this site.

I only use V6 for capture & edit, then use TMPGenc for encoding, which produces results that are acceptable to me at high CBR. Some blockiness is probably unavoidable given bit rates that will allow a decent amount of viewing time on CD, but it should only be obvious with fast-moving parts of the screen. One thought - SVCD (MPEG 2) will give probably you better results thatn VCD (MPEG 1).

If you are going the V6/TMPGenc route, remember to capture in DV PAL format (as we are in the UK). When you start up V6 it will ask you what format you want to capture in. DV Pal is the correct one to choose.

V6 gets round the FAT32 problem quite happily initially by doing on-the-fly capturing to a sequence of files each of the maximum file size available which is about 4.2Gb. You can't see the join! The only problem I have had as a result is that you can't join them together when editing! At the moment I am frameserving my complete project direct to TMPGenc which creates one MPEG.

    Hope this helps

  10. Many thanks for all your help, VCD looks good no blocking or shimmering, very happy with it, will now try a SVCD and see if there`s a difference, and the good thing is that I`m still nearer 60 than 70 years of age, hope for me yet, but I`m sure to be back again soon, Luck to you all.

  11. Nitrox, So what did you do ? Share with us your experience ? And what about that camcorder issue ?

You should be able to the complete job from within Studio 8, select SVCD to burn, I have found S8 to give give excellent results, much better than previous versions. You may find it worth while updating your software, I am currently using the beta 8.5.18 which has overcome some of the transision problems etc.

    good luck

  13. Greeting`s donpedro, Well in answer to your questions. Not really sure but as part of heads at the top of the picture were being cut off, I re-ajusted the monitor and secondry screen to both the same size 1024x768 running at 50Hz, rendered at that size and everything turned out great. As for the JVC mini DV it does have in/out but still cannot get back into it, Regards, Nitrox.

Hi guys I have posted this before but might get some answers here. I have a g4 mx 460 tv in. The prob is it recognises the nvidia driver but refuses to capture. Also when i try to set the codec to capture it only gives me some options and the check box just above this option is greyed out which says list all codecs. Also preview option is unavailable. I cant capture it says capture error. Using the latest 8.5 18d

    Plz help someone
    thanks

    Win me Os
