    This is pretty amazing:
Did snyone see the press about DVD ROT?
Apparently it attacks DVD's that aren't laminated properly or have been treated roughly.
    Now here's a thought:
You know that there's a subtle difference between a CD jewel case and a DVD one.
    Its found at the center..
That's right, the GRABBER in the center may be destroying your DVD's
if you're using CD jewels instead of the DVD kind

Doesn't the CD Jewell case have a slightly 'wider' spindle to locate
the disc and thus exerts a greater lateral force on the DVD disc via the
hole edges and raising the concern of delamination ? YES

cd jewel cases pose no danger to dvds. this is because of the way dvds (any disc media) are manufactured. the exterior edge is the only edge with a fully exposed seam. take a coaster you have made, and throw it against something like a brick wall, cement floor so that the disc lands perpendicular to the hard surface. the layers will separate. now pull them apart, and you will see that the center ring is fully fused at the indentation. the negligible pressure from the "button" of the cd case won't transfer through this.

i'm only going on about this from seeing a posted comment from a person working at a major duplicating plant (TECHNICOLOR) who advised us not to use the CD cases on DVD's..
But you may be right that this pertains to REPLICATED offerings only and our own burns as you say..are sealed

  4. I don't know about DVDs, but I had a troubling experience with some CD jewel cases that I purchased from a local store. After a couple of months I noticed some of my CDs developed cracks radiating from the inside hole. most were about half a centimeter, but one even reached into the data area. I also noticed that the ONLY CDs that exhibited this were the ones in the jewel cases that I purchased from this store. This Happened to both CDR and retail CDs. I immediately inventoried all my CDs and removed any from those cases. Luckily the only data damaged one was a duplicate of downloaded pgms. I returned the cases to the store in exchange for cases of a different type.

This reminds me, I just purhased more jewel cases (from a different store), and I need to periodically check on them to make sure their not damaging my cds.

  5. I haven't got my copy of the physical specs to hand, but I seem to recall the center hole and the hub ring are the same sizes on DVD and CD, although the thickness on a DVD is a little more than a CD.

So in theory you shouldn't have a problem.

HOWEVER - if you have a dual layer disc, it is possible that if the layers have not been bonded properly that repeated extraction from a particularly tight case could cause the two outer layers (upper and lower) protecting the reflective layer to begin to delaminate.

When I find an especially agressive case that just won't let go, I always press down on the plastic retainer slightly to release the disc - which is good practice anyway because you won't flex the disc.

The only problem I have seen with the slim jewel cases is they don't seem quite as resilient as the "proper" cases when it comes to knocks and squashing - I know you should protect your discs from that but I'm sure we've all dropped or cracked a case before now. However unless you drop it edge on and the shockwave goes into the disc, the disc itself should survive.

Be aware of using cracked media in high speed drives (especially CD-ROMS) because the inertia on the hub can cause the disc to fracture catastophically at speed.
