what size of the movie a dvd can hold?

the blank dvd disc is 4.7gb, but the size of the movie has to be smaller. dvdflick sets a limit at 4.3gb for NTSC format. Is it true that 4.3 gb is the max that all the dvd authorizing softwares allow? Thanks for all the answers.

Blank DVD discs are 4.7 GB which is 4,700,000,000 Bytes, but dvdflick's 4.3 GB = 4.3 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 4,617,089,843 Bytes which only leaves 83 MB free on the disc just to be on a safe side.

If you can press the DVD they will use full capacity. For burned 4.3 is just safety, because they are sometime flaws at the outer edge of the disc.

As navi310 mentions, the total number of bytes is the same. It's just differing way of defining "gigabyte",
decimal (1,000,000,000 bytes) or binary (1024x1024x1024 = 1073741824)

manono is right. Most software will let you to push the limit beyond 4.3GB, but it is not recommended.
Most of them you have to go into .ini file to override default.

Not recommended by who? I routinely burn DVD-R discs to the MAX - and that is 4,706,XXX,XXX bytes. And I don't have any issues with these burns... and I use NERO to burn the disc.

No authoring software should care at all about the final size of the DVDR. What if you're authoring for DVD9? Using Muxman for authoring, I could author a 20 GB DVD if I wished. And I almost always author for 4475-4480 MB and burn to a DVD5 - 4.370 GB or greater. I like to fill mine up also, although I use ImgBurn to burn to disc. And I don't use all-in-one programs like DVDFlick. Please don't confuse a specialized authoring program with an all-in-one program that encodes and also does basic authoring.

Yes, I'm sure. The bar is set to the equivalent to 4,706,XXX,XXX bytes. This number is based on the number of sectors on the disc times the size of the sector. One DVD sector is fixed at 2048 bytes - although only 2035 are actually usable (IIRC).

The old version of Nero Vision I use sets it to 4.38.
