What Version of Media Player Needed

using windows 98 se, and have the version that comes defualt with it.

cause i really hate all the news ones from 6.4 , 7.1 , and 9

but do i really need them installed to do anything for editing , creating , encoding, decompressing ?

are there files, codes, dlls that are required that come with those programs that cannot be download separatly or part of a separate tool.

i ask cause try to decompress asf to make a nice mpg or avi file.

how do i convert it or handle asf, get errors with all programs.

NO ...for regular user ... use version 9 ...
for make ASF file use version 4 (i think asf is better than wmv)
for make WMV use version 7
for make new WMV use version 9.... !
the 7 is more stable than the 9 ....

Yes you need MEDIA pLAYER 9,, but you don't need to USE it...Let me explain....
That is, as your post suspects, if you install 9 and then NEVER use it...YOU can use the PROGRAM CALLED MEDAIPLAYER 2.exe also known as MEDIA PLAYER 6.4 which is still included in all WINDOS OS's and resides without an official SHORTCUT with which to LAUCH it alngside WMP9 or 8 or 7 in the WinsdowsMedia Plyer directory..
Please use this superior player 6.4 as all the codecs you get with9 are now available to this baby
