  1. Ive been looking at some dual processor boards for the AMD MP and thinking about puting together a system with that. The question i have is....Will the dual processor improve the time that it takes to transcode a video stream? From what i heard it depends more on the software than the board itself and if the software doesnt support it than the speeds wont be any better than with a single processor. Stuff like that would be the only reason i would put together a MP system but if im not going to get a performance increase it would be a waste. Any insight would help. thanks ya'll.

  2. Yes the software must be smp capable to get increased performance, tmpge is 1 program that is.Check out www.2cpu.com

The operating system also must be SMP capable. That's NT/W2K/XP. Not a few gamers have deluded themselves with 98SE and dual CPU's

The application must also support SMP. Single threaded applications do not benefit, other than that other processes could use other cpu's. I believe CCE supports SMP, not so sure about TMPG. That's not to say you couldn't benefit from it, just not like you think.

Dual CPU's can not get you 50% encoding time. At best you may hit 60% encoding time(there is overhead, and 2 CPU's = 1.8x the power, not 2x the power) versus 1 CPU. Quad CPU's get you about 3x the power versus a single cpu.

Quick addition to Gazorgan's post: WinXP Pro is dual capable - WinXP Home is not...

My Bad, I forgot. I believe W2K Home/Pro is the same way. NT is just NT.

Win2K didn't have a 'Home' edition, so there really aren't any worries with that OS. But then again, there are those weirdos who say WinME is the 'Home' version.. which then yes to no SMP support...

  7. Yes you'll want to use WinXP pro to get multiprocessor capabilities.

I believe TMPGenc uses 1 processor to encode, 1 for filters when there is more than 1 - it isn't full SMP like I think CCE is (but it is ALOT cheaper, more bang for the buck).
