  1. I've got a whole bunch of old tapes which are worn out over the years. I need to preserve them in CD format but i don't know how to begin with. Does anybody know ho to convert VHS to VCD, DVD???? Thanks in advance

Step 1: Click on Capture (on the left)
    Step 2: Read
Step 3: Do as it says in a guide that you found in Steps 1 & 2

The easiest way? Is there such a thing? Perhaps VirtualDub or VirtualVCR are worth looking into.

Are you talking "compliant" VCDs? If that's not essential, you might want to experiment with formats that your player will play, because most players can play "better-than-compliant" VCDs.

You'll save yourself a TON (and I mean a TON!) of hours if you capture to the format (resolution, framerate, audio frequency and bitrate, video bitrate) you want to write to the CD. Re-encoding to another format is the most time consuming part.

I'm quite new to this as well, but so far I've been very intrigued and quite pleased with initial results in using the KVCD format. Most players will play them, and since it uses a variable bitrate, significantly higher quality can be achieved in the same amount of disc space that a VCD uses. As far as I can tell, however, this format requires the time consuming re-encoding using TMPGEnc.

    All the best,

  4. Sure, there is a very easy way. Anyone can do it, even a housewife or a little kid.
Just go buy the Terapin VCD recorder (should be less than 250US$ at this time). Put in a blank CD-R, connect it to the VCR, hit PLAY on the VCR and RECORD on the Terapin.
Bingo, you will get 80min video on a 700MB CD-R disc.

If you want to make DVD the easy way, then buy the DVD recorder instead (less than 500 US$).

However, with this method, you will miss all the fun (and headaches, frustrations) in VCD, DVD making.
