    I need to re-encode some MPEG2 files before burning them to disc but TMPGEnc won't open them. I'm told that I need a decoder for TMPGEnc to read such files. I downloaded and installed the Ligos decoder but still no luck. Another decoder that was suggested on the TMPGEnc site is the CyberLink decoder. I went to the web site but can't find a standalone decoder. Is it incorporated in Power Director or Power Producer?

    Tagger,

    Are you referring to the VFAPI plug-in? If so, that's built into the latest version, 2.510, which is what I am using. That allows TMPGEnc to use either the CyberLink, Ligos, or Sony decoder. Just for the heck of it, I just downloaded that plug-in and will try to install it and see what happens. The net result should be zero since it's supposed to be already installed.

    The Cyberlink encoder is included in PowerDVD,the software player. You need to be runnning 2.57 or higher and not have your trial period expired.

  5. DVD2AVI is what I use for this. You could also use the MPEG2 enabled version of VirtualDub to frameserve. Instructions on this site somewhere - look for DVD to VCD conversion.

  6. I was refering to the MPEG2 plugin. I believe older versions of TMPGEnc required a plugin in order to process mpeg2 files. Newer versions have a 30 day trial period for mpeg2, after that you need to buy the product (which is well worth the $$).

    What errors are you getting when you load the files into TMPGEnc? Are you sure they are mpeg2 files?? There are utilities in the Tools section to the left that can identify exactly what the file is and what codecs were used to create it.

    TMPGEnc has a 30 day trial period for creating MPEG-2. No recent version can natively read MPEG-2. (I believe older versions coluld...)It can however, provided you got the right MPEG-2 decoder installed on your system, read MPEG-2. The easiest method to get TMPGEnc to read MPEG-2 files is to install Power-DVD. Even the trial version will do. Rumors has it that you can even uninstall Power-DVD, and it will leave its MPEG-2 decoder behind for TMPGEnc to use in all eternity.

  8. I guess I just got lucky with TMPEGEnc and mpeg2 files. Must have gotten the correct decoder while installing/experimenting with different software.

    This is good to know as I am about to nuke my system and install two 80GB drives (raid) and reload everything!!

    Mats-

    I have PowerDVD but still have no luck opening MPEG-2 files. Is there something special I need to do in order to get this to work?

    Also, I have downloaded the plug-in linked above. Where do I extract the file in order to make it work?

    @MJDore:
    Not that I know of. Take a look under Environmental settings and see if you can find the plugin for mpeg2, and raise its priority.

    Thanks, Mats. I downloaded the plug-in, increased its priority, and I was off and running. Thanks again for your input.

    Telemike- I had issues with this, too. Basically, I extracted the files into the TMPGEnc folder and then went into Environment Settings and raised the plug-in's priority. Works like a charm now!
