(Edited - 8/24 - Problem seems to be that "standard" SVCD are too "rich", if I can use that word, for the AD-660. I've since started using EazyVCD and ripping to XSVCD. Whatever bitrate I select, the resulting discs play on the AD-660 just fine. I should note that the Apex AD-1110W can play all of my SVCD/XSVCD discs without a problem so it seems that the AD-1110W is the eventual replacement to my AD-660 but, in the interim, using EazyVCD to make XSVCDs is the immediate answer.

Okay; this might be a bit convoluted but please bear with me.

I am using Super DVD Ripper (from TinySoft) to rip from DVD to mpeg2 for SVCD. The quality of excellent and I have almost no complaints. (More later on this.)

I am also using the ADS Instant DVD (v1.0) which, despite a few artifacts every now and then, has also worked beautifully.

In both cases, I capture as mpeg2 for SVCD.

When I burn an SVCD from an mpeg ripped with the ADS device, it will play perfectly on every DVD player I try.

When I burn an SVCD from an mpeg ripper with Super DVD Ripper, it will NOT play properly on my AD-660 Apex. The audio is delayed by about 4 seconds (and it varies) and the video seems to slow down and speed up (slightly). I've played the same SVCD in a new Apex AD-1110W and it's perfect.

I don't have a problem buying the new Apex (under $50 at WalMart) but I'd really like to know why one mpeg2 is okay while the other is not. By the way, I've ripped the same DVD using both methods and the problem only appears with the Super DVD Ripper method and, of course, the AD-660.

I am thinking that the ADS Instant DVD is ripping at a lower bitrate. Any advice how I can check this? I have both a PC and a Mac so tools on wither platform are okay.

Thanks in advance. Please feel free to eMail me your answers or post them so others can have the benefit of your answers.
