Hey I'm a nebie here, and unfortunately, despite searching various sites, deja, and vcdhelp I've been unable to find a solution for this apparently very basic problem.
I'm not sure how to convert ATI capture files. I'd like to eventually burn them onto DVDR.
Isn't ATI's TV Wonder supposed to capture at MPEG -2? How do I start converting these behemouths ( 4 + gigs for a football game for example) into dvd compiant files). I thought that mpeg2 files WERE dvd compliant. Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out how to edit or transcode the file into something I understand.
Is there anyone who can straighten me out I'm pretty frustrated at getting stuck this early in the process.
Basic question. Using my TV Wonder I capture a 30 minute tv program to my hd.
Now what do I need to do to the ATI file in order to have Nero burn a dvdr that is viewable on my dvd player?

Have you read through this yet?
https://www.videohelp.com/dvd
It outlines the allowable resolutions and bitrates for DVD, for video and audio, as well as directory structure, etc.As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war." -
Dignan, there are two possible ways to capture to mpeg2 with Ati cards. One is Ativcr format, which is not standard. And the other is real mpeg2,which is standard. You can choose them in menu(like mpeg1 and avi too.)
The following are the values for DVD compliance:
Video size NTSC: 720x480, 704x480, 352x480, 352x240 @ 29.97 fps
Video size PAL: 720x576, 704x576, 352x576, 352x288 @ 25 fps
For MPEG-1 only: 352x240 (352x288 for PAL)
Video bit rate <= 9.8 Mbit/s, constant or variable.
I frame distance (GOP size) <= 18 frames (15 for PAL)
Audio: 48KHz LPCM, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or 96kHz LPCM.
These are the specs taken from Ati AIW's help file. -
Thanks for responding.
Ok it appears that the Video capture resolution is limited to a maximum of 640x240. I'm hoping this limitation will be resolved with the new beta software? Multimedia Center 7.6? I've been reluctant to install it as I was afraid it was buggy and I had a hard time getting the card to install at all.
ricardo2 - I don't see a setting for the ativcr format in the help menu just:
Best Quality - MPEG 2 640 x 240 NTCS
Good Quality - MPEG - 2 640 x 240 NTCS
Longest Time - MPEG 2 640 x 240 NTCS
Video CD- MPEG 1 352 x 240 NTCS
Even when I upgrade to the latest mmc my prob will still be the same. The files that are captured by the TV Wonder card don't have extentions. What is the 'ativcr' format a proprietary format that can't be converted? That is unbelievable.
So, assuming that I get mmc 7.6 installed correctly will the files I capture be in a different format? Will MMC 7.6 allow me to 'uncheck' the ativcr format that appears unconvertable?
Which setting should I chose and what program(s) will I need to convert (encode?) the file into a ready to burn format?
Are there any step by step tutorials that show how to convert these ATI tv capture files?
I think my problem (one of them) may be that I don't understand this ativcr format.

I believe I have MMC 7.6 installed NOT MMC 7.1 but I'm not 100% sure.
The name of the file in explorer is tvw-pci-ve-mmc-7-6-0-1b which I believe is MMC 7.6
Is there any easy way to find out which version of mmc I'm running? It's not listed in the device manager or on the mmc itself.
