  1. Hi All

I notice that all solutions to author vcd/svcd/mini DVD on this formum are quite difficult to work with (at least for beginners)

I'm using Ulead Videostudio 5 with the Ulead DVD plugin and I never have any problems authoring. It's simple, almost idiot proof, probably why I use it
I can view any Cd I made, whether it's a VCD, sVCD or mini DVD perfectly on my Lenco DVD02.
I prefer VDC or mini DVD over sVCD. sVCD simply doesn't deiver the quality it promises

    just my two cents worth,

    cheers

The svcd your making sucks because you havn't tried the hardway of doing it yet. It reminds me of the tortus and the hare. Your quality will be much better using another metod of production (if done right) I promise!

  6. For best resuls (xSVCD) this is what I do:

    1) RIP DVD
    2) Load DVD2AVI to determine movie source material. Ie. film, NTSC, progressive, inerlaced, hybrid, etc.
    3) If it's film I'll use a IVTC filter, if it's hybrid I use force film. Just leave NTSC/interlace alone. Generate D2V file.
    4) Extract audio (either DVD2AVI or azid) and encode with tooLAME.
    5) Run CCE @ 3passVBR. min=900~1150, max=2500, ave=1400~2200 (depends on movie length).
    6) If ncessary run pull down
    7) Use TSVC to add chapters (maybe a menu) and burn.

Lately I've been using DVD2SVCD as it does almost the exact same steps (handles subs differently then I do).

As for the TMPGenc vs. CCE debate I think it depends on your bitrate and if you're using multipass VBR. As a really high bitrate you might as well encode with CBR. But for lowbit rates (900~1800) clearly VBR is better. And while 2pass VBR in TMPGenc is good, it's very very slow. I can make 4passes in CCE in less time.

On my Tbird 1.2Ghz TMPGenc's 2pass VBR takes ~6x the movie runime, while CCE 3pass VBR (ie. 4passes, first is CBR) takes 4.4x the movie runtime.

  7. Here's what I do. I capture in mpeg2. Demux/mux it to an SVCD program stream and burn. A two hour capture encodes in real time. The demux/mux takes a few minutes. That's it. And the quality is equal to digital cable. Period, end of story.

Ulead Videostudio 5 created vcd's and sVCD will play in most all dvd players. the mini DVD's will be more of a problem. In Video studio and probably media Studio you can convert any avi and mpeg format to a valid VCD or sVCD file. The Ulead DVD plugin will also work in Media Studio (according to Ulead)
