best settings to use

hi all
yes its a newbee. i am realy having trouble converting files i get off the net to use on my stand alone player. much of the files i get are avi. i have down loaded the programs need to change these files to mpg so i can burn them. i keep getting errors with the TMPGEnc program that was suggest to use much of the time it is a string error at 97% completion. have tried many differnt settings. the other problem i have is in useing the Ulead move factory 2. when i use it i get error that says chapter number excceds fram number. i let it do auto chaptering and it still comes up with the same thing. i guess i am a real dummy.
please help if you can.

Your DL'ed AVIs are probably broken. Try to use VDub to get rid of the bad spots. See the How to repair downloaded video clips or fix audio sync problems under HOW TO for more help.
