Need help with file extension

Does anyone know what a .rar is? I have an app with this extension but I don't have a clue to what it is.

Rar is the extension used by a compression program.

name.rar

or if split into chuncks

name.rar
name.r01
name.r02

etc etc

"Winrar" creates these files and is needed to unpack them (Unless they are self extracting) name.exe name.r01

Same type of program as Pkzip,Winzip, Win ace

I can download and use a lot of programs. What I was wondering was if this particular program will cost me money to download and use.
